OK, I am getting sick of printing my song books and carrying the heavy load to a show each time. I am exploring idea with my best friend who is a programmer. I was noticing that Google tablets are coming down in price, drastically. Some of the older OS running models are going for as low as $70 or even less per unit. The spec is not spectacular but it will do the job. And some weight less than a kilogram per unit. I am going to develop an Android app that will connect to the laptop via wifi and provide users with my latest database of songs, from laptop to the tablet. There would be a small program running on the laptop to receive this and provide songlist to the tablet. I am thinking using the existing database from FastTracks database, assuming it's s simple SQL based simple database. I would write app so that users can choose a song and send it to the laptop via wifi and I would get the rotation set on the laptop side and the songs would automatically be added. It would be better if the laptop would automatically insert the songs to the Hoster but that would be too much I think. Also, about the security. I was thinking about some type of proximity alarm. Since most of these things have location info built in accurate to about 10-20 feet, that it would set off alarm if the unit leaves the area. Also, I am going to lock the OS up and it can only use the app on the tablet, unless you do a secret password to unlock to the main screen. So, without the password, the thing would be useless and just lockup, unless you are within the proximity of the laptop (or desktop if rack-mounted). However, at about &65-$70 each, they are almost throwaways. I spend about $150-$200 per year printing 8 songbooks. If I do that more than twice a year, the cost is about even. If the unit lasts more than a year, the return on investment makes even more sense. I was thinking getting 5-6 of them to start and add more if needed. The units last bout 4-5 hours on single charge so it should work through most gigs. What I need is some feedback on what you guys think. I am doing it mostly for myself but if there is enough interested, I may package these and sell them. Let me know what you think. |

Tricerasoft already has that app but I believe it is run off of the client instead of the hosting computer. It works with Super Remote tool. Even if you're not running JustKaraoke or Swift Elite, you should be able to do what you want with that. No need to write an app when it already exists. www.tricerasoft.com |

www.tricerasoft.com Thanks for the info Danny. I am a bit confused about the use. I don't understand what the client machine is all about. I want to eliminate the books so I have less to carry. My thought was to run this off the laptop I use to run the Hoster and let it link directly to tablets. This looks like I need to carry an additional computer to act as a client machine, in addition to the machine I use to run the karaoke software. It defeats the purpose of the lighter load. Did I read that right? |

All that extra could be another laptop or small form factor computer that has wifi capability. Could used as another station that singers who don't have access to your tablets can enter their songs. The program for the android is also available for the IPhone. Question what software are you using to play your files? CompuHost has a kiosk software where you don't need special software to access the server and this doesn't require an additional computer. |
