How many of you still see a need to tote a karaoke player to your shows. I could make my rack much smaller if I removed the player and only used the power mixer.

I have a couple of shows in fact that several people still insist on bringing their own discs. So, yeah, there is still a use for them for sure. Even if you have the exact disc itself, some people still feel the urge to use their own. Makes them feel like they have some sense of pride in ownership I suppose.

I get people bringing in their own discs as well so I will always have at least one player at any show. Also it's an immediate backup for my stationary show as I have all my discs there so if the computer crashed, I can just cue up the next song & be on my way for the rest of the night.

Why carry around a CDG player?

If you absolutely must offer your patrons the ability to play their own discs, just use a hosting program that plays discs, and get a compatible CD+G drive.

It's 2011, man.

Because my laptop is older than dirt, and don't want to make a change, just yet that is.

I wouldn't allow a host (unless I knew them well) to put any of my discs in his or her computer just so the next time, he or she, all of a sudden has it in their collection.

Yes a player is such a huge and heavy thing to carry around. C'mon, get real.

I use the Karafun player to play customer discs from my computer. It plays directly from disc, so there's no ripping or preparation time involved. If they don't trust me, well too bad... "Next!"

I have only had 1 person bring in their disc to my show, I was using karafun to play discs too, in over 16 years of hosting shows. I have zero space in my rack for a player.
That said for backup purposes I invested in a madboy cd+G/MP3+G disc player that plays CD+G's and mp3+G discs.

I have never used/owned a dedicated Karaoke player. Digital since Day 1.

+1 for Karafun.
Will not go the history way.
No offence whatsoever.
What do you guys get from it?
You get to see if your disk still works?

I haven't seen anyone bring in a disc in the five years I have been doing this, however I do have CDG players and keep the SC foundation packs for back up.

Really surprises me how many do NOT get user discs or even requests to do so. I usually get at least 5-10 discs minimum on any given night. But these singers know that I have the ability too. I guess if you do not offer nor let them know you can, you will not get that customer base. I actually promote the fact that I can and will play your disc.

I still use the old Pioneer Dual Tray PD-V10G for singers who bring their own discs.
I also have another player in my rig/rack case, the Pioneer 555 (can’t remember the exact model) that plays vcd & dvd.

I wouldn’t mention the ethnicity but these guys love to sing from these two formats. Vcd’s are a pain because it’s too slow to load, & once cued you have turn off the multiplex function to eliminate the vocals. I let them know I have their songs in my laptop, but no amount of explanation will suffice for them to reconsider. Their comfort zone I guess. But I don’t mind. My gig is stationary; I don’t have to lug my equipment around.

I don't use a player. Never have, never will.

I do all the time. I burn mine on to compilation disks, as I am not going to carry 50+ original disks around with me. But I have no problem singing from the book on the rare occasion the KJ won't play a burned disk.

As a host, I don't get many disk users, and don't really have a need to carry one, and don't in my very portable rig. But I have on in my big rack.

I got rid of my players when I went digital. There is no use for it. I use a laptop with the Hoster, which allows you to temporarily rip the customer CD+G and queue it up to play. Once played, it's gone from the system.

As for a backup, I carry a second laptop, in the trunk of my car. I have the backup music on an external HD and worst case of crash, use the backup laptop with the music.

It's much lighter than having a full players with me all the time.

Post subject:  Re: Still a need for Karaoke players?

For me in the last 6 years or so, since I have moved to laptop karaoke, I have only had 2 people ask to play their discs. Even when we used disc and a player there was only one guy that brought his own discs in to play, and he only showed up to shows about 3-4 times a year. SO no CDG player for me, and my laptop dosent play them either.

I still have my CDG player and discs in the closet for a "backup".

Thanks for the responses, my computer drive will play cdgs so I'm going to downsize once again. I do like the idea of using a second computer as a back up.
