anyone use light scribe? if so whats needed to use it, is this the way to make labels or is the paper sticky better. |

To my understanding, Light Scribe is for burning labels onto your CD or DVD so that you do not have to use the sticky paper stick on type. It uses the laser in your CD/DVD burner to burn the label you chose or design onto the CD/DVD. You need the software, and a CD/DVD Burner, and A Windows Computer running an operating system such as...XP/ or Vista/ or Windows 7. I have never used it, but have always wanted to try it.

None of the above. I like the inkjet disks. I use both Lightscribe and Inkjet. Lightscribe requires a Lightscribe drive (many HP and Compaq computers come with them) and a special disk. Basically, you turn the disk over in the drive and it prints monochrome label. Lightscribe is not very vivid, and the writing tends to rub off over time. But you don't have to employ a printer. I use this to make compilation karaoke disks for carrying around and singing, and a few minor business uses like beta software or Linux installations. It requires some software, which you can get from HP if you look. I think Nero and maybe some other programs support it. Inkjet disks fit into an HP printer (I suspect Canon and others have printers but I don't know). The printer prints directly on the disk. I use this for producing copies of software, and tend to print up 20 at a time. Software came with the printer. Paper labels are a pain to fit on and they can cause binding in a drive. I never liked them. |

the program i use is called surething cd labeler pros: no label to peel back and get stuck in player no ink to buy cons: disks are slightly more expensive labeling does wear off after a lot of handeling not vivid printing dull kind of look the labeling process usually takes 15 minutes per disk i use this because i always have problems with paper labels both have their pros and cons i guess |

mckyj57 and snapperdog pretty much sum it up. I haven't used an inkjet printer for printing directly onto the disc, but sounds like a far better idea than printed stick-on labels which will invariably find a way to stick themselves inside your CD drive. If you don't require coloured labels, then Lightscribe is great, although I have had one disc fade as the others have mentioned. Not sure if that was due to being left in direct sunlight or through handling. Yes, you do need to have a Lightscribe compatible drive. But then you'd need a CD/DVD compatible printer if you were to go the inkjet way. With Lightscribe, the discs are a little more expensive. They have special coding patterns (similar to barcode) on the inner rim. But there are no ink or paper costs. If you use a laptop and purchased a USB external Lightscribe drive, you can label your discs wherever you are. ( I have an LG internal drive in desktop, so if I write data to disc away from home, I label the disc when I return home). mckyj57's idea of using lightscribe for compilation discs (or any disc that may have a short lifespan) is great as it avoids using expensive ink for discs that may have to be replaced regularly. |

You also need a lightscribe disc to use it. Won't work on regular discs. |

I found that the paper labels were costing more than the discs themselves so I just started writing the titles of the songs right on the top of the CD's with a sharpie. |

Wow! Can't remember the last time I burned a cd! I used to print out custom made labels. Still have the label making kit. All my music is digital. I have 2 ipods, (just got a new 80 gb classic for free from apple) and I also have 12 gb on my android. I have an Altec Lansing boombox ipod player and a 7" JBL On Tour player. Just as I never looked back to vinyl when cds came out, I will never go back to cds. I do still however have my vinyl lp collection. Hope I didn't miss the point, too lazy to go back and read! |

Weather forecast this evening calls for a low of 5 degrees, but it must be even colder in hell today.. because I agree with you. Anytime I burn a disc or DVD, it's titled with my trusty Sharpie. I suppose if I was trying to distribute a disc in some kind of promotion kit or something i'd get CD labels and run 'em through a color laser printer.. but for 99.9975% of the discs i've ever burned, labeling them with a Sharpie was sufficient. |

That's what I do for 6-8 songs on a disk. If you want to burn 22, you have to have some pretty good handwriting and I don't. |

Ink Jet onto the CD face with CD Labeler. Get a CIS (Continuous Ink System) if you print a lot of stuff. I buy "last years model" Epson, get the CIS, and then buy 2 or 3 more unopned printers and I'm set for 5 to 10 years of printing. The only way too go in my opinion. Lightscribe takes forever to "print" onto the disc.... |
