Really! They run 200 songs and then criticize you if you want something else (see #4)

That's Cat's Meow on Burbon Street, correct? I've been there, and it is a very good karaoke bar. When you have a touristy town coupled with drunk 20 somethings practically begging for a good time, coupled with 200 upbeat or classic songs, everyone wins! This is not the type of place that has regulars, it is all tourists, so 200 carefully selected songs is plenty!

That rocks.

Further proof it's about entertainment, and you can run a highly successful show with just a few hundred tracks.

I love it.

Have fun. Don't take karaoke too seriously. After all, it's Bourbon St., not American Idol.

Clearly this club isn't the place for the hard core karaoke crowd, just like Burger King isn't the place for the food aficionado.

Looking at their list of tunes, I can find most of the songs requested at my shows are on the list, and they must update it.. they have tunes from Ke$ha on there.

I've seen something like this done before. The guy had the usual book before 10:00 PM and after that dropped to 300 upbeat songs. The place was rocking. I never had the nerve to try it.

Like stated it's a tourist place in New Orleans (Mardi Gras - Party Central). Doesn't need regulars, they probably don't see the same person night after night. So a 'hard core crowd' is not what they are looking for nor what matters. Most of the songs on that list are all upbeat and within 10 years old or so. I doubt most any of us could run a show on mostly newer music. I totally do not doubt that it can be done successfully, but it does have to have the right ingredients - and a high $$, busy tourist spot is a great starting point. Out of what is showing on that list, I can see 3 songs that get done at our show. But then we also get a lot more rock oriented crowds most nights.
FAR different from a karaoke club that does look for regular singers & repeat business - not a fair comparison.

I dunno, man.. I do three shows a week and draw a full house at each club.. and I operate on a similar theory.. keep it fun, keep it light.. have a good time.

But i'm catering to the 20 something crowd, and anymore my shows are probably 50/50 between karaoke and DJ.. and many nights, it really is more DJ than karaoke.

That 'menu style' song list (downloadable from their website in PDF) is pretty cool, and boils down most of their songs in a single double sided sheet that i'm sure also doubles as a great inexpensive souvenir/business card.

I think I might implement something similar in my shows.. go through my history for the last 90 days and put the popular tracks on the list, along with other standards and classics, etc

Maybe have 500 or so of 'em printed.. and every few months update the lists and print another 500.

Ours is a 20 some primary crowd as well. Looking on that list, their bonus tracks (late night only? whatever that menas) I can see 14 songs that get done regularly at any time. Actually looking at the entire 'menu' I could probably get away with it as my list most nights if I wanted. Not alot of newer country listed though. Again would work in a place like that or a place not dependant on regular customers, I personally wouldn't limit the selection in my situation.

My guess is the place hasn't thrown away the discs no longer listed on the 'menu', and they obviously update the list, since the pic attached to this thread by the OP has different songs listed about the 'Rules' section than the .PDF on their website has.

Chances are, if there was a song someone wanted to sing that wasn't on the list, and you were to ask for it, they'd spin it for you.

As to their 'late night only' sections are probably there to encourage people not to sing some types of songs right out of the gate.. do they actually enforce that as a 'rule'? I dunno.

Did you see the warning under 'Duets' section?

Fair Warning! Slow songs are fun for small groups. Just be ready to choose a different song if there's a party going on.

I don't know that i'd do that.. but I have been known to suggest someone pick a more uptempo song when they hand in a slip with something real slow on a uptempo night.

If they don't want to, that's fine.. but I will shift their song around a bit during one of the 'slow down' periods.

Which suggests if the house is a rockin' by the time you and your buddys turn to sing "Ebony and Ivory" comes around, they're going to ask you to sing something else as to not kill the momentum and party vibe of the room.

went there on our honeymoon, it was elbow to a$$hole and flowing out the doors. it was all done on laser disc. i guess if there is one pace you don't need to update, that would be it. being the only karaoke bar there helps too.
it was cool i must admit, kinda a shame to see it in a picture on the news after Katrina flooded shoulder high.

Hey, think about it. I don't care how many songs you have, I'll bet the top 300 are the ones used 95% of the time. The rest of the library merely gives the opportunity for more choices.

BTW, got a guy in my area who has been at it in regular- not tourist- bars since '00. has about 700 songs ( he carries his discs in two 64 disc holders- and some of the discs are filler music) and seems to keep working constantly at average fees, using upper mid-level equipment. Been at one place for at least 8 years.....

Went there on our Honeymoon too. It was a great time, espically when my wife got to belt out a couple songs, the cround went nuts!

Like others said, there are really no "regulars" there, so a good list of 200 up tempo songs would be all that is needed.

We hung out at the Cat's Meow for about 2 hours, and then with to the FUNKY PIRATE to see Big Al Carson and The Blues Masters.

GREAT TIME! GREAT MUSIC in NOLA!

Two 64-disc holders???? Doing quick math, at 10 songs per disc, that would add up to 640 songs. I'm sure he has a lot of discs that have 15 songs on them. He should be able to fit it all into one 64-disc holder.

I've been to a show with 36 songs! (We counted them). Absolutely brilliant night. Sound wasn't excellent (he was running off a DVD player with two cheap radio mics and two small home stereo speakers) and he clearly took advantage of the late night venue and the drunks. He did allow the same song twice/three times/ten times in a night, sometimes even in a row and I think the only popular karaoke song on the list was "These Boots are made for walking". One of the best karaoke nights we've (my partner and I) been to... people were dancing on tables, swapping the mics between themselves, the host had muffled but excellent banter and we got to sing "Pour some Sugar on me".

My personal opinion is that good shows are never down to just one criteria.

lots of songs does not always make for a good show and sometimes a well chosen small list of songs can still as Marble has pointed out make a good show.

I take the "Rules" written on the bottom of the attached photo as a bit of throw away banter .

I feel there are many ways to Host a show and if that hosts way works gets them repeat work and happy customersfor them Fair enough.

I personally don't run my show that way but some of the rules , if I am honest I have wanted to say at one point or another but didn't.
