I went out to sing with friends last night. It was a slow night, only about fifteen singers. I'm known for sometimes tying my song choices together to form an overall theme. Many in the crowd enjoy trying to guess my theme for the night, but it usually takes the third or fourth song before they put it together. My themes are usually geared toward current events, forecasted weather (obvious), someone in the group, a celebrity in the news, general mood, etc..

Last night I sang:
Slow Hand - Conway Twitty
I'd Love to Lay You Down - Conway Twitty (my Mom was there early on, and she's a huge Twitty fan)
All of Me - Frank Sinatra
All The Way - Frank Sinatra
How Deep is Your Love - Bee Gees
Way Down - Elvis Presley
Do That To Me One More Time - Captain & Tennille

Was that TOO obvious?
My woman got the message loud and clear - And once in the proper frame of mind, Elvis's song "Way Down" spells it out beautifully!

I like your approach to a theme! :D

June, uses theme nights as part of her karaoke Show every Thursday but it is for everyone in the bar she will do some off the wall themes sometimes but they are interesting. One week she may do an 80's night theme and the next week the theme will be blood and any song will have something to do with blood. She gives away karaoke dollars (which are good for purchases from that venue only) She has a facebook page setup for theme suggestions now to get ideas for themes because she has been doing theme night for two straight years and I think she dried up on ideas.

I've done "themes" but basically, I find 3 songs with the same word in the title or perhaps in the lyrics (with a little stretch for the theme).

My gf does more of that than me. She has some fun with it, but people don't tend to notice without someone pointing out the theme.

We try to do themes every couple of weeks, and mix in categories too.

Usually for each round we'll pick a theme and everyone in the group has to do a song of that type, then we switch as we go.

So it'll be something like:

Love Song
80's Song
Rap Song
Rock Ballad
Etc.

It's always cool because at some point you're always stuck with a category you don't usually sing so you've got to branch out a bit.

Interestingly, after telling singers one night that the next slip they should bring up should be an Elvis song, now EVERY week they are doing it without me asking. So many Elvis Songs to choose from and even the youngest of the crowd seem to know the songs. Funny, even women can sing Elvis songs (I only say this because some male voices are just out of range of most female voices, not for any other reason.)

I don't announce if i do a theme to my songs. But sometimes there's subtle hints when I sing a song and depending on what's in the news or certain day event. April 20th I sing songs like Bob Dylan's Rainy Day Women, Black Sabbath Sweet leaf, and even sing Camper Van Beethovens Bowling Song for the other day's meaning. Last week I did Uncle Cracker Drift Away, Modest Mouse Float On, and then they got the joke and groaned when I sang Vapors Turning Japanese (I might've said Drowning instead of Turning)

Yeah, I'll do your theme on 4/20. Tom Petty's "Last Dance With Mary Jane", The Toyes "Smoke Two Joints", Afroman "Because I Got High, Peter Tosh "Legalize It" and more...

The Vapors, lol, I did that one too soon... I also told a joke along the lines of no electricity = no problem because so many Japanese are just going to glow in the dark. Groans all around.

Went out to Karaoke with my parents last night for Mother's Day.
I sang:
Mama Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys - Willie Nelson
Mama Told Me Not To Come - Three Dog Night
Tie Your Mother Down - Queen
Cover of The Rolling Stone - Dr Hook

But the one that made all the other mothers swoon was...
My Mother's Eyes - Tom Jones

It was fun.

I don't normally purposely attempt themes, but they can and do happen, in many cases due to current events.

The night after the news of OBL's demise, it was either patriotic, or song parodies based on the incident.

The week following Michael Jackson's death was probably the only time his songs were sung in my shows- every single night, I might add.

The absolute funniest was during the season that Hung was on American Idol. It got to the point that we had a Hung Night ( get yer minds out of the gutter... ) and the regs went up and basically butchered the song that they normally did best.....

My mother's day songs were:
Mother Mother - Tracy Bonham (it actually works for a guy to sing it just changing some words)
Mama Tried - Metallica
Duet: a guy wanted to rap Tupac's Dear Mama and I sung the background
Take your Mama Out - Scissor Sisters (Last song for me, my falsetto ruined my voice for that night)

It's the End of the World this weekend for my songs choices:
REM's song is too much of a softball song for people to get
Pixies - Where is my mind or Monkey Goes to Heaven
Talking Heads - Life during Wartime
Metallica - Four Horsemen
Doors - The End
Van Morrison - Into the Mystic
Gary Jules - Mad World
Def Lepard - Armageddon It
Probably get a girl to sing Blondie's Rapture while I sing Door's Riders on the Storm That's a great Mashup if anyones heard it.

Nice list. I'll be using some of those along with a few of these:

Modern English - (I'll Stop the World and) Melt With You
Dean Martin - Make The World Go Away
Eric Clapton - Change The World
The Guess Who - Hand Me Down World
Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World (not sung in the cartoonish way that most do)

For bumper music I have:

Moody Blues - Lost in a Lost World
Pink Floyd - Goodbye Cruel World
David Bowie - As The World Falls Down
Tears For Fears - Mad World
Blue Oyster Cult - Dancing In The Ruins
