Just updated my Siglos hosting software and found they added something they call instant sounds. Basically it's a sound board for adding sounds instantly to your show. There are some pre-loaded sounds (applause, laughter, siren, etc...), but you can change those and/or add more. Might be cool for show intro/outro, or pre-recorded announcements of upcoming events, drink specials etc... Do you or would you use something like this in your show? |

Do you or would you use something like this in your show? 1) 20th Century Fox introduction 2) Jeopardy Theme 3) Applause 4) Jaws 5) The Stripper at halloween I use assorted screams, thunder claps, howls, heartbeats, etc... This all comes from a seperate DJ program running in the background, I don't use Siglos. But this all depends on whether or not I'm actually a working KJ with a horse in the race.... that will be determined later I guess... |

But this all depends on whether or not I'm actually a working KJ with a horse in the race.... that will be determined later I guess... I used to go to a regular show in the DFW area and it always started out with just DJ music/requests while the KJ setup. When it was time to start karaoke he would always play Enter Sandman by Metallica and the head bar tender would do a fireball. Was pretty cool. Anyway.... I don't have a horse in the race, but I do have a horse in the stable ready to run. I was just thinking about ways to do this about a week ago and thought it might be cool to include radio ads the venue had already spent money on or even doing some voice overs for drink specials etc... Just trying to think of ways to add to a show that others in the area aren't. Most of them are just calling roll and passing the mic like a baton. When I decide to line my horse up in the gate I want to come out runnin'. |

Just don't over-use it. This type of insertion needs to be done sparingly. That way, it's always fresh. There is a KJ in Toronto that inserts something in EVERY SINGLE song and it gets old very fast. It simply looks like he's trying to divert attention from the singer to himself. He did that to me one night in the middle of a song (with a packed dance floor) and I simply turned around and handed him the mic and said "If you want to mess with this song, YOU can finish it." And I quietly sat down. He didn't get it. |

I'm not computerized, but use a hand-held device ( Falling bomb used for myself only, shave and a haircut, applause, halloween stuff, etc...). Maybe used once or twice a month at any given venue tops.. |

I was just looking at a way to add a little professionalism to the show as well as possibly create time to do other things. If I had announcements pre-recorded it would sound better than trying to do them while trying to figure out why something wasn't working properly, taking a restroom break, talking with a owner/customer etc... Would also add a little consistency especially if someone was filling in. |

hiteck wrote: Do you or would you use something like this in your show? I was doing this back when I started for a couple years. Back then there were no karaoke software (not sure if any existed then anyway) that incorporated that feature (now most do), but I did have a computer for my rotation program and fill music. On that computer I loaded Microsoft Office & used the toolbar loaded with all my sound effects. It was fun but did get old after a while. |

I use it to "seed" applause, using CompuHost's AudioBits feature. I found some pretty realistic small-crowd applause clips, and will start one of those sometimes when I think people aren't paying enough attention. I also will very occasionally use the Jeopardy them when someone is dragging their feet, and have a couple of others (Twilight Zone, Hawaii Five-O, Rawhide) which I stick in occasionally. But I use those once every couple of gigs. |

One I thought was fun for a while was playing Girls Girls Girls (Motley Crue) when a group of girls (I'm soooo creative ) would come to the stage until a female bartender literally jumped over the bar and up on stage, then proceeded to curse me out for playing it. She was in the process of cutting limes and in her journey forgot to put the knife down. Apparently she used to be a "dancer" and it was the club's song for their hourly 2 for 1 special. I guess my point is - if you're going to use sound effects, think them through from all sides. While they might be appropriate for some, they might be inappropriate for others. Inappropriate sound effects/bumper music could include but are not limited to: Fat Bottom Girls Crazy B!@%# any bouncing sound for busty women Addams Family if even questionably ugly NFL theme for larger women Sanford & Son - no explanation necessary |

That feature has been around forever. I had it in good ol' Sacks-O-Nuts way back when. I also had the ability to associate audio/video/Image with a singer. For example: One user wrote me that when a certain singer was called to the stage the image of a bottle of Viagra was displayed. I don't know why no one used that, I thought it could be funny as heck. |

Not all programs have the little visual instapops, but I could see pushing the viagra bottle jpg/gif if someone I knew was a player to f with them when they were trying to impress a potential.....? |

I have hundreds of these that I use for compuhost, wish I could load more than 45 at a time. I have movie quotes, cartoon characters etc. Gets a pretty good laugh. The only time I use them during a song being sung is when I sing or at the very tail end after the lyrics are done and even then I am careful not to use one that may upset the singer or someone else. Hasn't been a problem yet! |

Soundboards are cool when used in moderation.. like seasoning when cooking. I've used them in the past.. the wider the selection the better, especially if they're quick and easy to access. |

I have a few loaded up on my MTU Hoster program but I really don't use them that much. |

They're called "Samples" the concept has been around for 40+ years. The overall quality of use depends upon the user. |

When I search online for them, they are usually called sound bytes. They can be a hoot! I too use the Jeopardy one. Would like to have some different crowd applause ones instead of the same two that come with Compuhost. |

Or just buy sound effect discs and rip the ones you need. |
