I know there are so many of them...but I'm wondering if anyone can tell me which manufacturers are still in business, maybe someone else bought them and owns the rights to to them, etc and which ones have basically closed up shop and whatever discs you can buy off of ebay consider yourself lucky.

The obvious ones that I know that are still around are Sounchoice, Chartbuster, Sunfly, Zoom.

The ones I have no idea are Pioneer, Music Maestro, Pop Hits Monthly, Sing It Now (powered by Pop Hits Monthly), Sweet Georgia Brown, Dangerous, DK Karaoke, Nutech...I might have missed some.

Tell me about it! I was buying from there when I had my first little stand alone player. Waste of money! Couldn't play them in the player (which I knew) but could play thru itunes. I do have a couple decent renditions from there of Keith Sweat that I prefer to what I have on disc. Twisted and Nobody.

One question about the GEM Series. Is this series a rental or do you actually own it like any other CDG that you purchase?

That's up for debate. The ones that have it currently haven't gone past the 5 (or 3) year mark where they require another $30+ bucks to renew. But I cannot imagine that if you quit you'd ever have to give the discs back.

You niether rent nor own the gem series, you purchase a license for its' use. The license agreement clearly states that all ownership rights belong to Soundchoice. However, if you don't violate the license agreement (that you voluntarily sign - read it first) they can not ask for the return of the discs.
The license term is five years and can be renewed after that for three years at a time for $100 per three year renewal.

The gem series is not available to the general public.
