Bulletproof vests and armor plating.
But seriously, it depends on what area of town you will be in. I would be more concerned with being in the central downtown area or in the southern area of the city or too far on the Southeast side these are areas that are not known for their politeness.
Just remember that it is a blue-collar sport, and there are plenty of blue-collar people here. Especially if you're going to be staying anywhere near the airport. White-collar areas are in to the north and west of the city of Detroit.
