How much should I charge?

Post subject:  How much should I charge?
I've agreed to do the music at a Christmas party for a friend of mine on December 10th. My friend is preparing the DJ music and I'm preparing the karaoke music with what I own but I might need to order more songs... I'll be using my own system which is:

-Mackie 1402 VLZ-Pro
-DBX 266XL
-Lexicon MPX110
-Crown XTi 2000
-DBX 223XL
-Pair of EV ZX-1
-KV2 Audio Sub
-Laptop with Tascam USB interface
-No monitor, should I get one?

We are talking about 60 people that are all working at the same place in a max 100 people capacity place. Now the big question; how much should I charge? They want to do half & half and they asked that I also sing for them as I have friends that know about my singing passion, but that shouldn't impact the price, right?

If it were for a good friend i'd most likely cut them a break & charge my upper end club rate - even with a smaller system like outlined. My private show rates are usually 3-5 times what I charge for a weekly club gig normally.
Charge what you are comfortable with charging and what you think they'll pay. Monitor is up to you, usually there is a tv in house parties you can connect to.

My friend recommended me to it's employer so it's more like their corporate Christmas party. I find my system to be limit in terms of power, the amp pushes 475W/channel but will the EV's like it if I need to push it for a long period?

I could rent a pair of active speakers and use my EV's for stage monitors but now my sub won't be powerful enough :roll:

In that case i'd probably charge closer to my regular private show rates. Figure a price you'd accept, give them a higher price quote, but 'discount' it to your price to give them the feeling you are giving them a break.
As for the speakers, really depends on the size of the room. It might be beneficial to rent a couple more powered speakers & use them along with yours - it should be fine. If it's a smaller room, you shouldn't have any problems.

I went to see the room this morning and I think my sub will not be enough? I'm thinking on getting another KV2 KX1.2 so I can place them both under my ZX1 using a pole or perhaps would you recommend I buy a bigger one? Two KX1.2 would give me 1000W RMS and for the same price I can get about the same wattage but for a single 15" or 18" plus the additional weight...

One thing i learned from UK DJ websites is , you charge what you are worth not for an equipment list.

Some DJ's here have minimalist equipment but charge a fortune! but they offer massive customer service and attention to detail. Their unique selling point is themselves , not how big their rig or light show is.

Its very easy to start of at a low price and then get known as the cheap guy and its hard to then move your prices to an area you would like.

friends often thinking they are doing you a favour in getting you more work will quote the discounted rate you charged them unless you make it perfectly clear to them what your normal rate would be.(sometimes even regular residencies make that mistake unless you make it clear.

Don't be taken advantage of by friends or let them pray on your good will charge a fair amount but not too cheap.

Only you can decide what that figure is

I'm doing a corporate Xmas party Friday night. 4.5 hour event. I am responsible for playing upbeat christmas music during dinner, helping with some givaways after dinner, then 1.5 hours of open dance music. 50-75 people.

I've done three events a year for the past three years for these same guys, so I'm cutting them a bit of a break on my rate due to their loyalty. I'm getting $450.00, bringing my smaller, more mobile rig and three lighting elements. It takes me about 20 minutes to setup and 15 minutes to break down. Gig is about 15 minutes from my house.

I would typically charge $125.00 an hour, including setup and breakdown time, for this type of thing, possibly a bit more if it was a long drive or larger setup.

You should ask for $350-400 MINIMUM for your event, I'd say.

In my case it's starts at 5:00pm till 1:00am but a friend of mine which is an old DJ already prepared the music and prepared the program for the evening so I'm only responsible of the karaoke portion and bringing my equipment of course :wink: They are paying us $600.00 but in fact I got a better deal, this corporate party is for an optometrist company so instead of getting my half in $ I can choose a new pair of glasses worth up to a $1000.00 @ retail :shock: This is cool cause the old man needs a new pair with prescription...so that is a great deal for me 8)

Do you mean that you are EACH getting $600, or that you are EACH getting $300 for an 8 hour party?

Each $300.00 but like I said, I'll take the glasses at $1000.00 max instead of my $300.00:wink: I know, $600.00 is not much for 8 hours but I'm doing it for a friend and it's only 10 minutes from my home.
