Girls just want to have fun Bohemian Rhapsody

First, to be fair, Bohemian Rhapsody ain't exactly a walk in the park to sing...... My all time number one on this list would be PBTDL, which is invariably yowled a somewhat overserved group preparing to review inputs all over their shoes. I call it " The Official KJ In The Bathroom Song". Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors". Like The Bee Gees, anything by The Four Seasons / Frankie Valli Montgomery Gentry's "Gone" ( I'm being kinda humble here- hosts don't count.... ) Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are"

Your topic line says "songs NEVER sung correctly," yet you talk about songs that you feel people just don't sing well. That's two totally different things. JoeChartreuse wrote: My all time number one on this list would be PBTDL, which is invariably yowled a somewhat overserved group preparing to review inputs all over their shoes.
I call it " The Official KJ In The Bathroom Song".
I can live with most of the people (whom I've heard perform(?)/sing(?) this song) just sounding horrendous (it's been rare when I've heard a couple sing it really good). My pet peeve about it is that most of them don't sing the CORRECT Male/Female ending, and they just sing the Male part to the closing of the song (the Female part being "It never felt so good. It never felt so right. And we were glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife."). Let's see... another song that (for the few times I've ever heard it done) people seem to sing wrong is the ending to "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." They tend to sing the closing like the chorus instead of how the opening bars began. Another song that I've heard sung wrong is "Hotel California" (at least one word in the song). Most of the times, when someone queues up the Backstage version, the person singing this song doesn't really know the song, so when he/she (yes, I've heard Women sing this song too) gets to the part that says "Her mind is definitely twisted...", they sing it that way.... The line is supposed to be "Her mind is Tiffany twisted..." "God Bless the USA" --- Most people that I've heard sing it, don't know to wait that one beat (when the cymbal hits) in the last chorus... ".....And I'd gladly stand up (cymbal beat) next to you..." They just sing this line with no pause.

There is no "right" or "wrong" way to sing a song at Karaoke. There is only "in the style of the original artist" or not.
There is a thread currently on this forum complaining about people that try to sing a song like the original artist. There apparently is no pleasing everyone.
I hope everyone who sings can please themselves (no masturbation jokes here, folks), and doesn't worry about what you will think, or whether you feel that it will be right or wrong.
Like the Hokey Pokey...that's what it's all about.

I agree,, there is no wrong way to sing a song,,, Example,, how do you eat an apple? So many different ways, but none of them are wrong, it's what feels right to the individual.
However, there are those people who just simply can't carry a tune at all,, and I still have to just grin and say "thank you" as well. I had started a thread several months ago telling of my plight with my "special ed." karaoke,,, well, it turns out that "I" am the one who had to accept them,, not them accepting me. It's their 3 minutes of fame, and they are going to use however they deem right for them (within reason of abusing the equipment and the audience)
As far as songs that don't "ever" get sung right,,, I couldn't name a single one, because even the artist themselves can never sing it the same twice.
Enjoy!!

I would agree with these, most people just sing these as a party have fun - not really for the musical 'art' . Quote: oddly enough...most of the other ones named here get nailed. go figure Would have to agree with this as well, most of the others listed I hear done actually quite well. Including PBTDBL. I'm not talking identical to the original per se, but definitely in tune, time & nice to listen to in general.

birdofsong wrote: There is no "right" or "wrong" way to sing a song at Karaoke. There is only "in the style of the original artist" or not. I have to disagree with that statement. You may choose to sing a song in the style of the artist or in your own style, and that's fine. But, regardless of which style you sing it in, if you don't sing the lyrics correctly, then you are singing the song wrong. IMO, singing a song in your own style implies you are changing the way the song sounds by altering the melody of it (singing it slower, faster, jazzier, sexier, higher, lower, etc...). It does not mean (again, IMO) changing or excluding lyrics to the song. Now, I realize that Artists remake songs all the time. Examples: "Santa Baby" - By Eartha Kitt and by Madonna. Here, the lyrics were not changed, but the style was. One is slower. One is sexier. "American Pie" - By Don McLean and by Madonna. Here, Madonna sang a cut version of the song. But, that's not what I am referring to when I say the song was sung wrong. I'm not talking about remakes of songs. See my example below regarding "PBTDBL." Although I made a reference that I've heard many people sing this song horrendously, that was not what I was referring to when I said the song is sung wrong. cueball wrote: My pet peeve about it is that most of them don't sing the CORRECT Male/Female ending, and they just sing the Male part to the closing of the song (the Female part being "It never felt so good. What I thought it was meant to be, ended up being something totally different (as indicated in the opening post). Instead of what the title implies, it looks like the Author intended this to be a thread that just mentions popular songs which one feels are rarely sung well at Karaoke shows. birdofsong wrote: I hope everyone who sings can please themselves (no masturbation jokes here, folks), and doesn't worry about what you will think, or whether you feel that it will be right or wrong.
Like the Hokey Pokey...that's what it's all about. Now that last statement is something I can agree with. That was a very nice way of saying, just let the people have their fun.

Friends in Low Places and Bee Gees. I may not be the best singer in the world but both fall within my range. FILP is pretty easy in my opinion. I've seen others do it. Haven't seen anyone else do Bee Gees though.

Of the 100+ times a year I sing "PICTURE" with some girl, about 75% of the time the gal sings the MALE harmony part throughout.
I always switch to the female part once I know what's going on, but without fail, the crowd thinks I'm the one messing up when I start off singing the same harmony part as the girl, which really makes me HATE that song.

For me the one that grinds my gears is Human by the killers
many , many ,many singers insist on putting an S on the end of the word Dancer.
This seems kind of like a dead topic, but I registered just so I could put my two cents in! cueball, as somebody who has both of these songs in their repertoire, (and sings them the right way) I am all too familiar with what you are describing. First of all, the thing that I find funny about the Backstage version having "definitely twisted" instead of Tiffany twisted is that it doesn't even flow in a smooth way! It's a whole extra syllable! I've also experience a whole bar singing along to "God Bless the USA" and when it gets to the part of "And I'd gladly stand up (cymbal)next to you", I can hear nearly every singer not pausing. I can actually add a few other examples. There are some duets where one singer is meant to begin the song and then either on the first chorus or the second verse the other siger joins in. A lot of Tim McGraw/Faith Hill duets are like that, as is "Leather and Lace" by Stevie Nicks and Don Henley. However, more often than not if I am asked to duet with somebody, they usually do not know the songs well enough and I end up schooling them. The one thing I will say that I am guilty of is whenever I sing a song that seems to have a lot of ad-libbing at the end, I justy kind of have the KJ fade it out. I've never been good at faking lyrics.

Qiuck note on singing a song wrong. I remember going to a queen concert in high school (yeah I'm that old). Freddy Mercurury sang Now I'm here and throughout most of the song went down a third instead of up a octive on certain parts of the song. Does this imply he sang it wrong?
I don't really think most songs are sung wrong , just some are sung poorly. I have also found that a karaoke song sung poorly can be as or more entertaining than one done well. (not always, but sometimes)

Went to a Bob Seger concert a few years back, didn't sing in the original key, or sing in the higher notes he used to. It was 'wrong' in the sense it wasn't like the original, however it was still in key, on time and sounded great. I have singers the improvise a song their way lots of times, may be technically 'wrong' but as long as it is still nice to listen to (unless you are just one of those anal listeners that have to have it the exact same as the recording) then let them sing it wrong. The title of this thread should have read "Karaoke songs NEVER sung well!"

The title of this thread should have read "Karaoke songs NEVER sung well!" I agree (and posted that much), that this topic thread should have been titled differently. In the spirit of the ACTUAL title of this thread, I tried to post some examples of songs that are just sung incorrectly (wrong). As to singing a song in a different octave, that doesn't (IMO) make it wrong. That just goes to something that BirdOfSong posted... you are just singing it in a different style. Here's another example of when you alter the way the song is sung, such as "Unchained Melody"... Some people can't hit that high note when you get to the lines "I need your love," so they sing that note in a lower octave. Again, that doesn't (IMO) mean you sang the song wrong... you just sang it in a different style.
