Typically we do the fund raiser events for local kids and parents trying to raise money for sports etc. We are happy to do it as we help advertise and usually bring in a packed house of regulars and friends. However Saturday night we stopped into the tavern for a drink to find the event going on and a 2 man show with one speaker and one sub working..a kids "plug and play" karaoke player hooked to a monitor and his sound ran into his mixer. As soon as I walked in I was swarmed by people asking me why? lol I walked over to look at a song book, they didn't exist. He had approximately 30 party time karaoke cd's, of which most were very dated. I was informed by the bartender that he was a new to the business and trying to get established and was doing it for FREE. :withstupid:

I didn't bother saying anything to anyone, I'm sure the situation spoke for itself to the people there, but this just makes me want to put my system up in my garage for my own personal use lol.

Took the words out of my mouth.

These are the guys that make bars say "We tried Karaoke and it just didn't go over...".

Fools.

You should snail mail this thread to the owners, let them see what the true professionals are saying.

Free = Krapaoke!

I walked into a random bar a few years ago that had the same thing.

The hosts (husband/wife team) had a pink Mylie Cyrus karaoke player and about 50 discs, and plugged into the bar's house system. The mics may have even been the ones that came with the pink player, very plastic-y. They worked for $30.00 plus a bar tab.

I talked to the manager and asked if he would be interested in a "real" karaoke show, and he said YES!!, but also that they were on a pretty tight budget, which I took to mean they couldn't afford me no matter what figure I threw his way over $30.00, so I didn't even bother past that point.

That show lasted for at least 6+ months that I know of, but the bar did have $1.00 Miller bottles that night, so that probably had as much to do with it as anything!

I'll take it. I'll combine it with a bunch of SGB disks and a Nady mic. I hear that if my hosting skills are up to snuff, that ought to be enough. It's just karaoke.

Don't laugh--we used a toy player for our home practice system for years and it really didn't matter as long as it was hooked up to decent speakers/mixer. In fact the thing outlasted one pro player we had bought.

We are seeing a bit of this around here. Someone brings their home system to a small bar and just hangs out and puts up a song if anyone is interested. If it is an inviting place and people know their friends will be hanging out there, it can work well enough for the owner to keep it. It doesn't mean it will be a big threat or long term deal but it can draw off a few who only care about how many turns they get to sing or who want to support the underdog.

Leopard, you are right, it is not a threat. And if I can pull a positive out of this it would be how different it is to be at my show and then this one. Meaning, I pride myself on being professional and having pro grade equipment and knowing how to use it. Having the customers who were there come up to me and let me know they thought it was going to be us hosting and asking where are we going to be next. We bring energy to our show, get to know as many people as we can and get as many involved as possible.
Actually, now that I think about it, I do not blame the bar owner for NOT paying this guy lol.

haven't seen anything quite that extreme out here thankfully.
what kills me on all of this type of crap, is that you had been doing that show for how long? the person organizing it saw, "eh, it's karaoke, it's no different."
we put a lot of time, thought, and money into building our systems to be the best we can make them. we constantly update and get new music spending time and seemingly endless amounts of money doing so, we work on our hosting skills to be better than the rest, but some yahoo with a toy player and 30 discs is looked at just the same by the "powers that be" (organizer, bar owner, etc.)
then the singers, asking you to bring in your discs so they could sing what they wanted. i am sure they understood when you declined, but then went and found a song they COULD sing, not one they WANTED to sing.
now the shows like that..........crappy hosting......dog $hit system......dont have the songs i want......who cares? those are out here and they are packed week after week, and even when i am there scouting the comp, (unfortunately they ARE competition) the singers will even sometimes comment in conversation about his attitude, lack of new songs, horrible sound, and still they go back week after week.
sorry 'bout the rant everybody, but it's stories like these that make me wonder why i try so hard when i could half a$$ it like these other guys do and still succeed.
