Hi people in 3 years time I will have been married for 25 years and we both like the idea of coming to the USA for a holiday ...
we have both been to new york but when we were there I didn't see any karaoke bars (was only there for three days and stayed in Manhattan.

my sister in law lived in a Brownstone and was showing us around posh places and not the sort of dives and drinking holes i often frequent back home. so i didnt go to any karaoke places.

when we go in a few years i would like to go to few karaoke bars (ones where you sing to the audience not private booths)

so which city do you recommend for a brit abroad?

I live in NY, and let me tell you that NY (especially Manhattan) has Karaoke all over every day of the week... It's just not something that's advertised in papers/circulars. It's more word-of-mouth knowledge. There are some websites you can check (the next time you hit NY), but keep in mind, they don't always update.... One site is murphguide.com (and sean only lists a few places... I know there's a lot more out there).

I have a picture in my mind of Las vegas that its like our Blackpool but in the sun..ie very tacky and false with not much in the way of culture and more of a night place than day time place BUT damn good fun if you want to party..my trouble is yeah i like to party but i also during the day want to meet real people and visit interesting sites and shop a bit as this is a holiday.

so maybe my idea of Las Vegas is wrong and it is full of down to earth real folk and has lots of real culture?

You have the description pretty much spot on.... it's an "amusement park for grown-ups"

I have now been to karaoke in 157 cities in 30 states and provinces of the US and Canada. My personal evaluation of a great karaoke gig is:

1. Good sound, pro equipment.
2. Good audience.
3. Get to sing often.

Obviously hard to find. My best luck has been in smaller cities in Canada like Thunder Bay, Prince George, and Moose Jaw.

Among big cities, I have found Nashville, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Seattle to have decent gigs. I have seen them all over Florida as well.

Downtown Nashville has some pretty serious karaoke. Tons of wannabes all hoping they are going to discovered.

A few years back, I really enjoyed karaoke in Las Vegas, except for one place that allowed singers 3 songs in a row. I'm not sure about now, but many places offered it from 6 or 7pm...... which is more consistant with my awake and sleep schedule. In many places, not only do you have a crowd of seated customers, but you get to add more listeners, if you sing a song, that actually causes passing gamblers to stop and listen. Also the number of karaoke shows gave me quite a choice, though trying to choose one can give you fits. For some reason, the three visits, I've made to Vegas resulted in very dry sinuses, irritated & even blowing out blood once in while. Anybody else ever have that trouble there?

Rob, that's a loaded question!

Without question the best Karaoke can be found in New Jersey, in any city or town in which I host!

I would have to throw in Daytona Beach, Florida as my second choice though. I've had some terrific times there.

I suspect the karaoke landscape will be different than it is now by the time you get here.

thanks for the info people.

yes it might be different in a few years but i like long established venues and scenes so if the answers are still the same in a few years i will.

here is a bit more info about us , remember karaoke is important to us but also the place itself as during the day we would like to explore

we are both 45 years old in 3 years time

it will be in July when we want the holiday on or after the 19th.

we both like good food

I like singing at public karaoke bars (not booths)

we both like beaches , and i love swimming

I love technology especially DJ gear PA and sound reproduction

My other half likes shopping

we like meeting new people and socialising

we like good wine and a drink or two.

we love music

We are liberal in our views but dont go about shooting our mouths off about it , we are not racist or homophobic so i wouldnt like to go to a place that generally was ..does this rule out some cities?

So Lonman are you labeling the mid south and southeast states "homophobic?"

Reading the map upside down again are you?

I'm 30 minutes from there, and I avoid it like the plague. Expensive, cold in the winter, hot and muggy in July. Maybe as part of a visit, but I'd hate to see you go away with thinking, that was the United States.
Las Vegas would be 100 degrees plus at that time of year, but it's very dry. Casinos are very cool inside, with inexpensive dining all around. You are also 5 hours, very scenic drive, from the Grand Canyon. The famous Hoover Dam is only minutes away. You don't have to gamble to enjoy Las Vegas. If you have a gambling problem, Vegas can be a bad choice, but cities like Chicago, also have many casinos in and around them.

Lonman, New Orleans is one of the most open minded cities anyone will ever visit, and it's located in the south east. I don't think there are too many cities that can compare to it when it comes to food either. Music, nightlife, strip clubs, gay bars, you name it, the French Quarter has it. Oh, and did I mention the food? Not saying it's the best city in the US, but it is one of the most interesting. Since that IS my hometown, I may be a bit prejudice though. By the way, did I mention the food.......
