Also, when we were growing up, we didn't have nearly as many choices. We sang, because there wasn't much of anything else to do. Baby Boomers are what got karaoke going, and I don't know if enough young people will keep it up after we are gone....I sure hope so.

I have to say the majority of my singers are the younger crowd and they LOVE the older stuff. They are pulling out songs I haven't heard for years and I often wonder how the heck they even know them!
Karaoke is definitely here to stay, at least in one form or another.

Here in my area, I believe karaoke will continue in one form or another, it's the bars that are being pushed out. Bars are closing at an alarming rate, and soon the only ones that will be left are the large clubs that will NOT even think about karaoke at all, because it won't be able to draw large crowds (except for events of course)

Bars are having a tough time of it. It isn't even a matter of they will stay open because people want to forget their troubles--people don't have any money to forget their troubles with. We get in trollers every single week--singers from next door trying to recruit people to switch, hosts coming in to sing and inviting people to their show, hosts talking to the bartendress about how they could bring in more people, retired hosts who say they will do a show for beer and gas money just to keep their hand in for the fun of it, retired hosts inviting people to their house for karaoke parties--it is dog eat dog with some at the moment.

On the other hand, the young people do like karaoke and the kids are fans of American Idol and know how to hold the mic and they love older songs as well as new. It is just a matter of will they grow up to sing it in bars or will they have too many home options.

The other thing is many still have that interest in having a garage band and doing open mics and live music. We get in some young music history buffs/musicians who like to sing Beatles, Doors, Janis, etc. and I have a feeling that encouraging them to bring in backing tracks of their own compositions or allowing them to plug in a guitar every once in a while would really be encouraging to them. I know some will argue that it isn't pure karaoke but it only takes a few seconds if they are tuned up ahead of time and it could be a matter of adapt or die.....

my 8 year old grandson is a KJ and host shows at his after-school program and church functions....he is still disc based for now ; ) plenty of young people out there to keep things rolling.......plenty of oldsters remember the sing=a=longs that came before.....the original karaoke :D
