World's "Kluge-iest" Setup

Post subject:  World's "Kluge-iest" Setup
Back in the olden days, before PC's, new hosts would often start up with whatever equipment that they could scrounge together. Some of it was fairly pitiful- my own included.

However, in this day of a PC and 2 powered speakers for many start ups, I ran into a setup that was just plain strange.

To be clear: Yes, it was awful, but this is not why I'm posting about it. I'm actually trying to figure out the WHY part, in regard to the audio.

The guy had a small ( I'll guess at 125w per side) amp driving two passive speakers of unknown brand, from which only the music came..

The vocals were heard exclusively through a Peavey (KA?)-100 keyboard amp on the floor.

Why? I simply can't come up with a real reason. My best guess is that he figured that the low power music amp might not provide enough vocal punch? Pure guesswork on my part.

Any thoughts or even guesses greatly appreciated. No debates please- I'm just trying to satisfy my curiosity...

Maybe the two passive speakers of unknown brand were actual hifi speakers and to avoid damage by uncompressed vocals he routed the vocals through the keyboard amp?

he was probably couldn't afford to buy a mixer so he couldn't mix vocals and music so it had to be seperate.....

I admit when i started in 199? i had:

2 soundtech 15 monitors
mackie M1400 amp
gold jvc 5 disc carousel karaoke machine - still have it and use it!
and about 100 cd+g's most of them ntech (boy they sucked!)

I was new and didn't have much startup money.
i couldn't afford a mixer so i used the mic inputs on the karaoke machine itself

Could be he saw some correlation between a set of moving lips and his organ, and thought they should be presented in a mutual arraingement..... :)

My first "pro" setup was a pair of Yamaha BR12s, a yamaha EMX66M mixing amp that grossly underpowered them, Samson R31 mics, and the legendary JVC 303 CDG player, which I wish I still had (sold it for like $75.00 in 2007). My first set of discs was the entire Sweet GA Brown collection, the entire NuTech SAV collection, Chartbuster Essential 450 1, and a few small assorted Music Maestro sets.

I remember my first show that everyone kept giving me hell because I was the only DJ that didn't have the karaoke sensation of 2001 - PICTURE by Kid Rock/Sheryl Crow!!

Can you believe that song is 10 years old? People still request the everliving crap out of it at my show!

I'm feeling pretty good about my first set up! It's still my current set up but with better PAs, new computer, new rack, more songs,, etc etc. I guess I missed out on the good ol' days!

My 'first' setup consisted of alot of Pawn Shop items total cost for all purchased was approx $1500 (in 1993). The only thing new I had was the mixer, mics and 30 band eq.
Peavey Unity 8 mixer
Alesis Midiverb 3 effects (still use this today)
Alesis MEQ 230 eq
BBE Sonic Maximizer 422A
Peavey VSX 2 way crossover (still in use)
Peavey CS800 Power amp - bi-amps with the highs on one channel & lows on the other (great amp, boat anchor weight though)
2 Ross 15" cabinets refitted with EV 15"/Peavey 1" compression drivers/Peavey passive crossover w/bi-amp capability - these actually sounded great, wouldn't mind still havng these.
Peavey 12" powered floor monitor
Rat Shack 5 band eq for the monitor
Peavey PVM80 mics
This system ran for approx 8 years until adding to, replacing due to equip failure or just upgrading to better components (and expantion).

Rented Pioneer laserplayer & 50 discs, bought at least 1 disc a week (remember these discs ran appro $120-150 each then) until I could eliminate renting the discs, then bought the player.

I had a similar start like some of you above.
I was given 3k to start up a Karaoke show and work it off.
I had no clue back then about anything Karaoke... lol
So I went with a full Vocopro setup and SGB and Nutech, SAV and a few SC disks. Everything disk based of course. lol
Oh my, what a pain that was, but so much fun when I started out at the same time.

Then I started reading more into the subject, finally found this forum and things got better and better...

EDIT: Yeah, in between I was a proud owner of the CAVS JB-199, preloaded with 22k songs, which I really honestly thought was legal, since I spent $3.5k on it. Man was I pi$$ed when I found out about the legalities... lol

When I first started, I got absolutely NO training. I could not figure out why my music came from one speaker and the music from the other. Turns out that someone had set the PAN left for music and right for vocals.... We eventually lost that show, but I eventually learned wtf I was doing (no thanks to the guy who I worked for).
