I'm suppose to meet a woman and sing the Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow duet "Picture" with her (I agreed to sing it before really trying it out.) The part I'm having trouble with is, of course, the line "I was off to drink you away." I'm not great, but I can handle the transitions in Lit's "My Own Worst Enemy" and Billy Joel's "Piano Man." But without the benefit of a recording studio, I think I'm toast on this one. So, any advice on handling the song would be greatly appreciated: Can I drop it an octave? Some technique to gracefully fake it. Or maybe sing it "differently?"

Best,
Mark

P.S. I guess "don't sing it" is advice, but not really what I'm looking for. ;-)

Ah, that was my advice!!!! j/k

If you can't sing it in the higher notes, then just sing it in the normal voice, maybe putting a little more 'growl' in your voice. I know several that just sing it in regular voice.

Yeah... that one is a frequently requested assist from many of my female regulars.

I find that if I add a "breathy-rasp" to my voice that I don't have to provide as much range if I stay with the melody.

Also, just a pinch of nasality for that "Kid Rock tone".

Make sense?

My first thought as well.

But, if you can't get the woman without doing the song...well, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

Use your stomach muscles and push that vocal out. Even if it doesn't sound as good as you'd hope, at least the effort will be obvious and that will impress your lady all the same.

Just be yourself, sing the song to the best of your ability. Sounds like you're trying to make a good impression on her... & if she likes you at all, a song is not gonna make or break it, it's what's inside (your heart) that matters most. Of course you wanna dress to impress & always put your best foot forward. I really can't give you any advice and/or critique cause I never heard you sing before so I don't know what you're capable of.

It'll cost you $5 to sing that song at my bar. That and Hotel California.

Thanks for all the advice (well, most of it :-p). I think singing it "normal" works well enough. I'd work harder at it, but hopefully I won't ever have to sing it again...

So as a follow up question, next time I'm in this predicament what's a good counter proposal? And please, no Sony and Cher.
