I've been around karaoke long enough to know that karaoke thrives at certain bars, while others, not so much. Here are some things that I think make karaoke work....

I love bars that have a stage, or at least a big enough area that I can showcase the singers.

Employees are very important. I love it when I have bartenders & servers who are friendly and want to see karaoke succeed. I have worked at bars where the bartenders seem to fight karaoke and Btch the entire time.

I love it when the employees don't just clock in, do their work, and clock out. I love it when they call their friends, or make friends in the bar so that they'll come see them. I especially appreciate it when they put it out on their own facebooks!

Good drinks are VERY important. I have a bar right now where the drinks are notoriously weak. It's a small town, so word travels fast. Look down the bar and you will see almost all beer drinkers. Those who are drinking the mixed drinks are usually those who don't know any better.

It's not really my job to market the karaoke show in your bar, but I do. I can only do so much though. I would appreciate it if you would put it out on your facebook before EVERY show. It would be nice to have you make up your own events calendar and include karaoke on it. Print or radio advertising would be exceptional.

Back to the drinks: make sure your drink prices are fair. While people around here might be willing to pay $4.00 for that Capt & Coke or $3.25 for that beer at Applebee's, karaoke singers are notoriously cheap and I suggest at least one beer or drink special to cater to those who simply don't have that kind of money.

I understand that your karaoke nights aren't always as profitable as you would like, but I have asked you multiple times for a shot special, one that will actually sell. I can sell a hundred of them if you provide me with one. A good one.

I'm sure there are a million more. What makes karaoke work at your bar? What are factors that work against you?

Oh, My BAD.

Nakedness. By the bartenders and servers (mandatory). Patron (preferably the female patrons) are encouraged to participate.

Side note: saw lots of boobies this week during the traditional rendition of "Show Them To Me" (way more than normal).

It seems like karaoke singers are more comfortable with sit down chairs and low tables then those high tables where you perch and you have to sit on your coat. Some will like sitting right at the bar but others like the choice of having something more comfortable.

I also like a set up where people can choose their noise level--loud on the dance floor but not driving out those who just came to relax and talk to friends or play pool. Boyfriend doesn't like pool tables and karaoke at all but it seems to be mandatory to have a pool table around here so at least having it somewhat removed from the karaoke action is nice.

As far as going to shows, I like bars with appetizers. And no, a naked JR doesn't count.

Nah, I'd be more like the Greek & Roman Tickle Room. After a huge meal, they'd retreat to a back room, where they would tickle the back of their throat with a feather to induce vomiting. They then would return to the dining area, and gorge on more food. True story.....
Funny though, several years ago, I had a part time job as a male stripper at one of those all you can eat restaurants... :)
