Just thought I'd ask what everybody else is doing on New Years Eve. We are doing a show that night. Probably work an extra hour, til 2 instead of 1am. Having hats, horns, champagne, a few giveaways. Alot of people are booking rooms at the hotel, so they won't have to drive. For those who don't know, our show is in a hotel lounge. Already have alot of feedback, should be a really nice show. Soooo...... what are you doing???

I will be on deck for New Year's Eve as well. It will be a bittersweet affair since this is my last gig as a host at this location and this was my first and only show I have had thus far. I am training a replacement host this month and he takes over for me the first week of January.

It is our night so unless we get surprised by a band at the last minute, it is us. Thanks for reminding me to work on my balloon drop. The last one didn't work and ended up being used as a pinata.

I'm working. My owner typically pays me almost double to come in on NYE, but since this year it falls on my normal Saturday night, no extra pay apparently.

Hopefully the patrons will be in a generous tipping mood!

I have a regular show on Saturday, too so I'm on for NYE. I did contact the owner about 2 weeks ago and asked for more money that night (not much, just a $100 more) with the argument that I usually don't work under $600 that night. But considering it is my regular Saturday there and the long and good business relationship I have with her over the past 3 years, I'm willing to give her a break and do it for $350 instead. No argument...

I work it every year, no price increase, just another night for me, just a little busier. It is the one time of year I actually do a 15-20 minute dance break around the midnight hour so people can start to get pumped on the dance floor when we do the countdown.

No Karaoke for me that night it's a DJ night. Full DMX lighting, I might buy confetti cannons this year.

WOW Chip, now that's a hell of a rotation, I'd hate to be at the end of it. LMAO . Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year to all.

It's actually quite interesting. I've done this new year's job for almost 10 years and each year I always invite the "really good" singers that we've seen throughout the year. The "karaoke portion" of the evening runs about an hour and we have a simple rule: No Ballads, No Slow Songs.... All songs must be upbeat.

The really-confident-look-I'm-better-than-everyone-else bar singer usually will cumble and suddenly become too afraid to sing or ask to change their song to some stupid easy-to-sing ballad... like "crazy" by patsy cline.

With an audience that large, it's becomes more about song selection than it does actual singing talent. Pick a song the crowd can sing along and dance to rather than some cutting-edge song that came out last week.

It becomes far better to pick easily indentifiable songs like "Don't Stop Believin'" or even "Summer Nights" than it is to pick recent hip-hop. You'll have more of the audience dancing and after all, it's outdoors and cold -- you want to keep the audience dancing around -- (to keep warm).

We do our show on Friday night. Asked the bar if they wanted us to swap for New Years Eve and they said 'Hell No, We are closing at 7pm so we can party too!'

Only two hours and ending at midnight?
Why so short and ending so soon?

It's for the city's "New Year Extravaganza" where everyone comes out, finds a place to park and gets to the stage area... It's like a "mini New York City" that has entertainment for the first 2 hours and culminates in a really nice fireworks display.

Pays extremely well I might add. Perfect.

Patsy Cline's "Crazy"? That's funny because every disc I have where that track appears is scratched.......on that track only. It's the oddest thing.

:)

That's one of the songs that seems to just jump out of the book and grab people.

The first time I did karaoke, my wife and I were looking at the book, and immediately we saw These Boots Are Made For Walking. That just jumped out of the book at us, and we sang it. Margaritaville is another, and my wife saw Crazy immediately when we got our first karaoke set (Supercore).

Funny, I haven't had that song sung in a regular rotation is years. It happens on occasion, but usually with older singers.

I haven't heard Crazy in a while, either, but the ones that keep coming back (from the early DK days) are:

Mack the Knife;
Son of a Preacher Man; and
Total Eclipse of the Heart.

These never seem to lose popularity.
