Post subject:  Using a laptop

I hope I explain this correctly, as I am not as up on new technology as I should be. I went to karaoke a few nights ago and the kj had all his songs on a program on a laptop. He used no discs at all. What can you tell me about this? Thanks!

This is nothing particularly new. There are a few different ways to go about doing this. I do it myself. Once you get all your disks on to the computer it's cake. I personally spent almost a month just loading all my disks. Now they all just sit in my garage.

go to mtu.com and start checking around!

Check out programs such as hoster, CAVS and other type of compressed music for your research!

Take care!

I recently bought me a simple laptop....a Dell 1100....It works very well for music thru my PA system.

All I did was connect a 1/8" TRS jack into the output from the laptop and then into my mixer at a stereo strip input. I had to use an adapter from the Shack to go 1/4" RCA into the mixer. I'd attach a pic if I knew how!)I didn't attempt karaoke with it, but all I would have to do for the lyrics is attach a S-video cable from it to a TV.

It sounds really great till I plug the laptop in the wall....Then I get a hum from a ground loop. I can isolate that if I decide I want to use the laptop to play music....Otherwise, it's really cool to play music thru the laptop from any computer in the house using the wireless network I have and only one cable attached to the mixer.[/img]

add a hum eliminator , and hook it up with 2 channels through the laptop, you will get a great sound and no noise.

or you can get a USB device I've recently got that takes the sound and converts it to RCA (red, white and yellow) out...

works perfect for mp3+G...

and it's by sound blaster yet!

Knightshow is correct. I've been experimenting with both the CAVS and MTU Hoster. Both work well. If you're gonna do shows with it, my preference is leaning heavy towards Hoster. Either would be great for home use. I downloaded a trial version of Dart, but found it a somewhat needlessly complex and not very easy to use (at least with my limited knowledge :) ).

Just my thoughts.

Whats dart??????

Dart is a CDG editor/writing program. You can import mp3's and add the text (lyrics) to it or import existing CDG's and change the text (lyrics) (if needed)

I've got karaoke builder studio (which works VERY good... I've compared it with comparable Dart tracks, and think KBS is far superior!) for making my own tracks... the problem is, I'm not happy with removing vocals with goldwave. Of over 400 mp3s, I've only successfully done it three times, and two of those times isn't very good! LOL!

If anybody knows a program that does justice to removing vocals, I'd be very greatful!

Post subject:  Caution!!!!!!!

Before you buy the cavs, go tho their website and read all the bugs, and see how much help the Admin is offering the "Customers".

Then go to the MTU forum and do the same and compare.

Cav's is buggy, and they don't try to help the consumer much at all. that is why I changed from cavs to Hoster. THe Users on the MTU website are wonderful as well as the Owners.

Knight, I totally agree with you. I use KBS and Hoster myself, and would never use DART. I was just explaining what DART was.

Removing vocals from a track is only possible if the music was record 100% left/right with the vocals in the middle.

Here's my explanation.................
What you have to imagine is a live band on a stage with the vocalist standing in the middle and the instruments faaning out left and right from there. By using software to remove vocals, what the software does, is cut out the middle slice of the "stage", therefor removing the vocals.
The problem is is that when studios record the artist, they don't want you to be able to cut the vocals, that's why they blend the sound. (and for many other reasons, but that's one of them) You'll find that a lot of the older 33's, 45's and 78's actually respond extremely well with "vocal eliminators".
Another thing, if you remove your vocals, you'll find a loss of bass to your song. The reason for that is the bass player and drummer is positioned in the centre of the stage, so..............cut the vocals, you loose the bass.
Without the master track, you'll never be able to effectively eliminate the vocals. The software does not "see" vocals and instruments. It just cuts the centre core from a stereo file.

There is a website, and I don't remember the site, but you could probably find it on google. It sells nothing but backing tracks. that is tracks without vocals. and From What I was told it is fairly cheap.

I have tried to remove vocals on many songs, and have never been 100% successful.
