Just wondering. You that passed the audit, how does updating new SC music not bought from them work? Such as Chris now in possession of the Eagles?

Ahhh...
Chris like the rest of them know they are using pirated material.
They work on the fact that SC has no right to look at that.

jerry... u are starting to sound more and more disconnected.

This question has already been answered in another thread.

Those of us who have voluntarily completed an audit with SC merely have to let them know as we acquire new original SC discs and rip them to our digital library.

Having already completed an audit means, essentially, that you are already in good standing with SC. I have added more than 100, closer to 200 original SC discs to my library in 2011 and still have another 40+ to rip in 2012.

I own the complete GEM series, complete Foundations 1 & 2 as well as the Bricks. I also have already audited/verified 300+ CD+G's.

No one from SC has given me any grief. Kurt Slep himself has attended my shows.

Way back in 2010, when I first discovered these forums and joined the community of people who Host/KJ for a living, I decided to engage my competition and my vendors proactively. I am not the sort to sit back and worry about what might happen. I am the kind of person who seeks out knowledge and pursues resources to my advantage.

Many (detractors) people have suggested that by allowing SC access to my library that I am giving up something, starting the slide down the slippery slope. I contend that as an honest KJ who buys his music, I am making the slope a bit slippery-er for those that operate without integrity or honesty.

Truth is, I have saved myself and my venues an inordinate amount of hassle by getting in front of the issue before it could effect my reputation or cause any issues for my venues.

Yes, I paid for every CD+G that I own. No, I don't believe that SC's interests are in conflict with mine. I have discussed this with the owners of each venue that I have a contract with. The most frequent result has been that a manager comes to tell me that someone came in to offer them karaoke as a replacement for me at a lower price and possibly with more songs. The thing is, my venues know that they cannot possibly offer what I do. They are also aware of the risks.

This is the information age. Information is power. In my neck of the woods, I am the one with the power. My clients are aware, because I have made them aware.

jerry, stop with the far-out, cryptic nonsense... it's freaking me out... lol

No mate. It was very connected.
The OP was about the Eagles disc.
Or did I miss something?

Jerry... And where did you read that Chris's ownership of SC8125 is/was a pirated disc?

yes, you missed something...

I own 4 copies of that disc.

3 in shrink wrap and one in my library.

This is not pirated material as you suggest.

These are original manufacturer's product.

SC settled their dispute with the license holders for that music.

I am free and clear to use that material for my own purposes.

That is why I suggested that you are disconnected... from reality. You are putting forth innuendo and supposition and it certainly isn't constructive.

Just sayin'...

I got no problem with you mate. Nothing personal.

I just get the feeling that you're trying to be unclear and tongue-in-cheek...

carry on.

You mean SC never pirated it from the Eagles?
Sorry. Oops!

Exactly what I mean.

Look up the actual facts of what occurred with the production of that disc.

and then check out the CD-G disc titled "read between the lines".

Don Henley himself caused that problem. He created the issue.

Everything SC had produced up to that point had been accepted as normal business practices for karaoke producers.

I'm telling you this in a concise format because there is no way that I could relate all the information I took in when I discussed this with the owners of both SC and CB.

You already know how convoluted the licensing for karaoke products are. Take a look at the GEM series and see the Eagles tracks that are included.

Nothing "pirated", that is, stolen.

Why would the Eagles have a problem with SC when Backstage did a karaoke disk of them with no problem??

They never had a problem with the karaoke music when SC had it on Cassette only - no lyrics, it was when CDG came out & SC was producing their CDG library from their previous mechanical rights agreements - cdgs weren't classified as audio/visual yet - just phono records like cassettes. Most artists (or publishers) gave the ok - however after the fact - Don Henley & Gleen Frey both had problems with the lyrics being displayed & denied that, which is when 8125 was killed! From what I understand what was produced/sold was taken care of, but nothing more could be produced and stores that had not sold their stock had to recall them.

That just makes The Eagles big fat hiney holes, if you ask me.

At least since 1995!!!!!! Since the 8125 recall! However there have been several artists since then that have either pulled rights, denied renewal or other things which is why many discs are discontinued. Seattle bands are notorius for that, Alanis Morrisette is another, Garth Brooks is another, the list goes on. Some will give rights, then pull them at a later date - look at Chartbusters what they produced, as to what is currently available.

I guess they discontinued the two Led Zeppelin disks. That really blows since Volume 2 cracked on me last week!!! Wait, Karaoke.com still has it. Cool.

Jon - According to my paperwork, if I add 2% or greater new SONGS (not discs) to my Sound Choice Library, I need to update my listing with Sound Choice. No audit is performed and no fees are paid.

I will probably give them a heads up when I make significant updates to anything in my library just as a show of good faith.

What MtnKaraoke posted is well said.

Correct as stated above, but reiquires a bit of clarification. SC's settlement absolves them of any further liabilty from the previously produced discs. HOWEVER, that settlement does NOT mean that said discs are now licensed. They are no more licensed than the Back Stage version.

That being said, the publishers have never agreed to a lack of liability on the professional KJ's part. This is not directed specifically toward SC's product either, since much of the music available is in the same boat.

What I'm saying is that virtually all hosts are open to liability from the publishers/owners if they ever decide to get involved. Usage of the 8125 not exempt.

Never understood that kind of "behavior" from artists. Why wouldn't they want their songs being used for Karaoke? It might make them even more popular and end up in sales for them.
Some of them should really rethink their position on that and follow Taylor Swifts lead and produce their own Karaoke disks with the original music tracks.
