Advice about karaoke "rules"

Post subject:  Advice about karaoke "rules"
I always thought putting down a set of rules for karaoke would add a sense of tension to the show, and would just make it un-fun. But after a serious rise in:

1. people smoking into the mics
2. people grabbing mics while others are singing
3. people screaming louder than someone singing
4. people changing their song when they get up on stage
5. people asking me to play their discs they brought
6. people putting in songs with their name, for someone else to sing

I started thinking about setting some ground rules for my show, but I don't really know how to go about doing this without coming off as a killjoy in a party-like atmosphere.

Any ideas?

I've always had a general set of 'rules' that are mainly enforced. Some nights I may relax one or two, but typically not.
These are what i've typically always used, printed in my books & on a 8'x4' wall poster in the club.

You don't have to come off as anything but a karaoke host who cares about his show and his equipment. There is nothing wrong with playing other peoples' discs if they are originals. Grabbing mics is just wrong and bad etiquette. Screaming while others are singing, while being rude, is a hazard of the business. Drunk people do drunk things. People do change their songs. It happens. It's annoying, but it happens. There is no reason why you can add a SHORT list of rules, just keep it friendly sounding and don't nit pick.

I printed up some "rules" and put them in the front of my songbooks for this latest run. I have found that they are 1) never read 2) completely ignored.

I don't generally have many issues anyway, and when I see a "rule" being broken, I will call it out and remind folks between songs.

You do have to make it known that they are there. In your opening speal & occasionally throughout the night, make a quick reference to them. People will look at them eventually.

Here's what I have in the 1st page of my books:


The 10 Commandments of Karaoke

1. Thou shall not walk in front of the Monitor when someone else is singing. It is extremely distracting and very rude. "I Should Have Known Better."

2. Thou shall always applaud for every singer. Someday you may be up there. Show "R-E-S-P-E-C-T."

3. Thou shall not sing Back-up for someone unless they specifically ask you to. We do not need "A Little Help From Our Friends."

4. Thou shall not ask the KJ if you can sing out of turn just because you've got "Leaving On Your Mind."

5. Thou shall not continuosly ask the KJ when it will be your turn to sing. "Enough is Enough."

6. Thou shall not change your tune once you get on Stage and it is all keyed up. Just "Let It Be."

7. Thou shall not go to Karaoke and just drink water. Support your local Karaoke Establishment, who is paying for the Entertainment, by having just "Two More Bottles of Wine."

8. Thou shall not be "Swinging" the Microphone by the cord, nor "Beat It" or drop it!

9. Thou shall not get up on the Stage to sing with a Drink or Cigarette in hand. "Na, Na, Hey, Hey, Kiss Them Goodbye."

10. Thou shall not try to take over the Karaoke Show just because your Parents or Friends are in town. Go to a Studio and make a recording if they want to hear "Only You."
