Has anyone gone a step further and tried to make a career of this? Have you been encouraged enough to take a chance, make a demo and put it out there? I would love to here your experiences.

Check out my originals if you want (click on the www icon under this post). The website is there.

Just a local studio, I wrote Alone, and the guy I work with wrote the rest and did all the music. I have had some offers and stuff, but have not taken "the next step" yet, as I really don't know where I want to go with my music.

I am basically just looking for a local band I can sing with, or be a wedding singer or something, just for fun :) I don't think I would be happy being famous.

It would be neat though, to have my song played on the radio just once, or make a music video (If you remember a girl named Marin Ord, she was from Edmonton and got to do that, but you don't hear about her anymore). That would be neat :)

I will definitely check it out.

Although my lifelong dream has been to be a famous singer, I just started karaoke-ing last year. My mom had always tried to get me into the business, but as much as I wanted to pursue it, I just didn't have the nerve or the confidence. After she passed away, I just kept thinking more and more about it. My hubby bought me a karaoke machine and after practicing with it, I decided the time was right. That coupled with the fact that I'm probably going through a mid-life crisis led me to a karaoke bar. Once I popped a couple of xanax  and my nerves were settled, I sang my first karaoke song in front of a live audience. They didn't believe I was a karaoke virgin! I could not believe all the compliments and appause. I was just hooked.

Little by little, I'm going towards something. I'm not sure what yet, I'm just getting my feet wet here and there. I've made a demo and distributed it to a few people, but nothing's materialized yet. I know the industry is very hard to get into. It's not just about talent, but they want a certain "look", too.

If being a wedding singer is what makes you happy, why not? I agree that being famous is not always what it's chalked up to be, but isn't it nice to dream?

P.S. I just checked out your website, you are awesome. I especially liked "Hide the Truth". I can see why you like Avril, your style is very similar to hers.

Post subject:  Obvious Hijack Thread Ad Plug

It is so blatantly obvious that this is...

1. A Hijack Thread that compromised the non-commercial sob story subject of my own entitled "Are There Any Songwriters Out There?"

And...

2. A tactless attempt to plug a singer and a music website so ballsy and insulting that I've called this to the attention of the webmaster.

Sorry, the low post count and close sequential time frame gave you away.

This place is for real karaoke fans, some of which may be musical dreamers. But not poseurs trying to hawk their music.

Karaoke Scene charges fans to post their MP3s on this site. They don't need you coming here disguising a free ad in the form of a thread while you pretend to be rank and file fans looking for a break.

Some of us karaoke people may be lowbrow and humble. But trust me. We weren't born yesterday.

You've been had!

By the way, Avril Lavigne, the female Curt Cobain, is just another skinny, scummy, musical Manson Family style grunge skank who has done to Rock what Rap and Hip Hop did to R&B. So believe me, we don't need another Avril!

Well, kcultist, you are seriously deranged. Here I am spilling my guts out and you insult not only me but the nice person who tried to share her story. Hope you sleep well at night.

As for me, I will not be posting anymore if this is the kind of crap I have to contend with.

Kcult, Take a chill pill man. Obviously Luly is not a songwriter, This thread doesn't steal the thunder of yours, Luly is talking about aspirations to be a professional singer, Your thread is about songwriting.

Luly, I've never aspired to be a professional singer, Although I would love to be. I have a very good singing voice and excellent when it comes to soul music.

Soul music takes a certain intensity and emotion and something deep inside that comes out in the music, I've always had that in my singing. Alas I started in this game too late in life to have a realistic shot. I started singing in my late 30's.

I once sang Mustang Sally with a cover band years ago and it was a thrill, Good luck on your quest, BJC

Thank you, Big Jimmy you hit the nail on the head. You know kcultist, there ARE sincere people in the world, unfortunately you must have gotten burnt a few times to be so cynical.

Jimmy, I'm like you, I've started out late in life and wonder if there's a shot at it. Could these dreams only apply to the younger generation?

I understand what you mean about bringing up all those emotions when you sing. It would actually be hard for me to contain them if I had to. I would love to hear your voice. Have you sub'd any songs? I'm going to check now.

Thanks for writing and good luck to you, too!

Luly, I haven't submitted any songs, In fact I've never recorded myself.

I've been a kj since 97, And I was singing karaoke well before that. I'm working from a year 2000 era Hewlet Packard computer. I'm not even sure if I can manage to record and post my voice and I'm probably too much of a dummy to figure it out.

It seems that contests such as American Idol try to dictate that unless you are younger than 24 you are dead meat. I personally have seen karaoke singers over the age of 24 who had the voice and stage presense to blow away the AI finalists.

I hope that another tv network starts a show with no age barriers, I would tryout for it.

Post subject:

It's the whole age/beauty thing. You've got to look a certain way to be accepted. If you've got a few extra pounds on you or a couple of wrinkles, they balk.

I won two contests this past year, one of which was the New York International Music Festival which you're probably familiar with since you're in NY. But after I won (among other contestants in different genres), it was pretty much a dead end. They wanted me to participate in their next one in Vegas at my expense and I just didn't feel like anything else would come of it. There are a lot of places that just want to take your money to feed your ego. Unfortunately there will be a lot of kids that are taken advantage of.

I personally am using a demo I made to upload my songs. I don't know how to do it any other way, but maybe if you went to the tech forum they could help you out. I'm sure everyone would appreciate hearing you very much. I love soul music and it sounds like you do a good job with it.

Wow Luly, That is so cool. You won at a festival, You must be an awesome singer. I'm not familiar with the NY contest but I'm not always hip to whats going on in my little town.

One asset you seem to have is good judgement. You sniffed out an apparent scam and that scense of judgement will serve you well in the future.

As far as Wrinkles and fat, Some of the best voices may be stymied by a few extra pounds or age. What a shame in a country where music is the motor, Best , BJC

Yeah, you learn with time. Maybe that's why I'm doing this now in my ripe, old age since I've learned a thing or two!

Thanks for your input, Jimmy!

First of all, boo hoo to your unanswered post. So, was your "Sob Story" post trying to get all us "singers and music websites" to come out? First, I did not post my webpage (for respect to the site), I merely told her to look at my originals, and where my webpage can be found. Next time, I will say, look at my originals and then pm her telling her click on the little www on the bottom.

And secondly, I have been here and known about this site for months. I was here, and posted some songs and got in some tiffs with a member here and deciced to take a "hiadas" so that no further problems will persist. Perhaps you should take a closer look at my join date, FEBRUARY 25, 2004.

Great you jerk. I was not born yesterday either. I am more than a karaoke fan and frequent karaoke at least two to three times a week. I have a piece of (@$%&#!) microphone that I boutght for $10.00 at London Drugs that my cat just finished eating. I use an old version of Cool edit pro to record my stuff, and have just learned how to edit properly with it.

As for the "pretending" there are a hell of a lot of members on this site that know me from another site and can damn well back me up.

And for notifing the webmaster, good, because he also knows me from a long time ago, and if you feel that I am obvioulsy too good to sing "amature" karaoke on this site, then good for you, and I don't care.

And as for the above words, I hope that they were not directed at me as I would call this harassment and slander and for that, I will report that to the webmaster and see how he feels about that.

And I agree with Luly. If this is what this site is like, again, I will just go and say to heck with it. I don't need to deal with this and people like this.

People like you make me sick.

I have read this post and feel that there was absolutely no validity to the claim that someone is trying to blatantly advertise their site or services. (As most members know by now, KS does not permit advertising through the forums.) However, a question was asked and answered.

Please note that a members low post count does not mean much. Many people on here have been active members for quite some time they read but do not post therefore they would have a lost post count. Further, the post count of Luly is rather impressive considering she is a recent member.

Please do not insult or flame others as this is a violation of the KS Forum rules. If you have a valid concern you may contact that person directly through email or PM. If that does not work then you may always contact me. I will attempt to resolve the situation.

I have been involved in more than my fair share of disputes - just ask around!

We appreciate everyones participation and welcome their input. Just remember to be mindful of others. This isn't the place for it.

Luly - BTW - a belated welcome to the site.

Thank you, webguru. Whew! As they say, one bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch.... This guy made me feel guilty for starting my topic and dragging poor ritisroo down along with me with his insults. I certainly hope he's learned his lesson and tries to be a little more civil and considerate next time.

Yes, I've become highly addicted to this site, much to the dismay of my hubby who thinks the computer's kidnapped me! This is a very fun and supportive site and I look forward to being involved in it for a long time.

Thank you for the welcome!

Post subject:  No, you take it easy, people...

You guys are the ones who are getting all up tight over this. I just know a shameless plug when I see one.

At first glance, it seemed a bit similar to my post. Like somebody was trying to upstage me. It was all so obvious.

Difference is, my thread was just meant to reach out to other karaoke fans who write songs...and not to post an ad posing as a thread.

Bottom line. You're got gonna get anywhere sounding like everyone else in brain dead, tone deaf Generation X.

I look forward to the day when alternative, grunge, rap and hip hop music is blown up in a baseball game bonfire like disco was in the 70s.

Karaoke fans by and large are partial to established hits, cover songs and original tunes, not commercial acts that try to copy what's out there.

If you wanna sell yourself, there's a whole cyberspace world on the web filled with MP3 Internet sales portals looking for the next big star.

Go for it. Good luck. No hard feelings.

Luly,

Just ignore the fool.

He used to have a signature that said something along the lines of "discussion only... flame war trolls go away."

He and I tangled over the basic concept that when I challenged him on something, he thought I was trying to "flame" him, when he's the BIGGEST person on the site to do so. What's sad is he either can't see it, or blatantly does it, and could care less about the consequences.

He was gone for a VERY long time. He never particpated much here, except for a couple of threads. And as you can see, he's very territorial over what he considers "his" ideas.

But what cracks me up the most is... even if what he said was true, that you hijacked his thread... SO WHAT???

As I said initially... ignore the fool. I do, and I've not answered any of his blatantly egocentric posts since our long-fought battle.

I welcomed you to the site, and sincerely hope you stick around. Your participation at the Singer's Showcase is wonderous to behold. And if I had HALF your talent, I'd want to go "pro" too!

Matt

Matt, I think he definitely sees what he's doing and just gets his jollies off it. Fine, I'm mature enough to back away and not let him get to me again.

I really appreciate your wonderful comments about my talent as well as all the other people on this site who have said how much they enjoy what I've sub'd. One of the main reasons I like karaoke is because of the comraderie and good feelings it invokes. We all have a common interest and we are a very supportive group. It does not surprise me that this guy has a history of being obnoxious. Hopefully webguru will stop him from being abusive in the future.

I do intend to stick around for a very long time. When I said I wasn't going to post anymore, I meant under this specific topic, just so I wouldn't have to read kcultist's further blabberings.

Thank you for writing, Matt.
