I'm the host quoted in the article.

:)

FAQ:

1. No, the photo is not from the show. It was at a small martini bar in Cape May, very dark, very intimate. The photo in the article is, I believe, from an appearance on MTV.

2. She sang "Suddenly I See" by KT Tunstall, which was the big song from her breakout film, "The Devil Wears Prada." Afterwards I said to her, "Isn't that kind of like wearing your R.E.M. t-shirt to the R.E.M. concert?" Thankfully, she laughed. She also sang Journey and something from "Annie" (her first major role as a child, iirc).

3. I did give her a signed copy of my book (Murder-Oke & Other Spooky Cape May Tales) but have yet to receive a $1M offer for the film rights.

4. She was delightful.

Cape May is something of a haven for celebrities in the northeast. I've had lots of Philly/ NY athletes, TV personalities, a couple of ESPN guys drop into my shows over the years. But Anne is probably the biggest. Philip Seymour Hoffman is a frequent visitor. I look forward to nabbing him this season. And the gang from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" drank at one of my shows, but did not sing, so they don't count.

Anyone else want to name drop with me?

Link didn't work for me, at least put who you are talking about in the textbox for those of us who can't get it to work. Yeah, Cal Ripken! That's where my name came from.

I got to sing for Motown greats at the 40th anniversary party of Motown records. It was also the first gig I ever worked with Chip on. I also did a singing telegram for Tiger baseball player Willie Hernandez with a room full of other Tigers.

Chip did a backstage party for the Barenaked Ladies and did a birthday party for a wife of one of the Tigers and sang with Jim Leland.

Sorry for the fritzy link. It was actress Anne Hathaway.

Never met Cal Ripken, Jr. I get mostly Philly guys and a few from NY.

Did not get her autograph, but she got mine, in the copy of my book I gave her.

"Dearest Anne,
Thank you for tripling my business.
Terry O'ke"

She's not QUITE a household name yet, but with The Dark Knight Returns and Les Miserable coming out in the next year she soon will be. She also co-hosted the 2011 Oscars. And not very well, I'm afraid. (She was a trouper, but you could almost smell the flop sweat...)

NO Terryoke, that's MY JOB when i rant over older look-at-me look-at-me overweight singers lol!!

These past 2 weeks there's been WAY TOO MANY entititled older unattractive singers that really turned my younger audience OFF and then some. Practically cleared the venue out going table to table singing to people and getting in people's comfort zones. Everyone hated that. And one guy wasn't wearing deodorant!

Sorta kidding though... Old people (i'm one too) are fine, just the unattractive SHOW-OFFs make me wanna hurl.

Drop Names? hmm.....not really...but

Lonestar in DC for Christmas Tree lighting came in after and sang "Amazed" on karaoke.

Kool & The Gang (2 of them) sang "Celebration" on stage for a girl's birthday celebration.

Bruno Mars, David Spade (joe dirt), Hillary Swank, THE Michael Jordan, Cate Blanchett, Katie Holmes (before tom cruise), Michael Rosenberg (lex luthor from smallville), The entire cast of Disney's Lion King, Chris Matthews from hardball, his wife Kathleen Matthews. There are a couple others i can't remember their names (getting real OLD i guess) like Rob ..----.. from adam sandler movies (he says "you can dO it!") and the comedian guy that says "yeah, that's the ticket!- from old saturday night live alumni.

I went with James Lowry (Elvis impersonator) to a cape may bar a few years back and he rocked the show. Love NJ shores! :)

Do you remember the venue? We may have met. From '05-'09 I sort of had a monopoly on the Cape May karaoke scene. Half the cars in town sported my "O'ke" bumper decal.

I'm only working 1 vertical show these days (I do 2 in the summer as well as 2 kid's shows) and get a pretty regular crowd of singers at that one. It's a nice mix of older and younger singers. The young ones beat the (@$%&#!) out of Adele while the older ones continue to beat a dead Elvis.

2 of my regulars, a couple, absolutely insist on maximum reverb. He is quite good but rendered incoherent by the echoing of the mic. She is quite awful and insists on singing Minnie Ripperton's "Loving You." Every time she goes for the high notes all the dolphins on the Jersey coast make an immediate right and beach themselves.

But she's the kind of singer that if you told her how terrible she is she'd probably kill herself, the type that tell Simon Cowell every year "You're wrong! I'll prove it when I put out my hit album!" And are immediately never heard from again.

Some business we're in, eh?

And that was some impressive name-dropping.

In my old band almost 20 years ago a guy came up and asked if he could play a .38 Special song with us. We said, "Okay." He picked up a guitar and proceeded to lead the band through "Second Chance" and "Hang On Loosely."

Turns out he was the guy from .38 Special.

Was pretty neat.

After reading this thread, and seeing some of the names, I am sad to say that I would be a nervous wreck working around people like that. I would be second guessing everything I did.

Nah. You'd be fine. Main thing is to not make a big deal. You're generally all in the "business" together. Most actors and musicians started from nothing and so understand and appreciate the job we do. At least, that's been my experience. They get made a big deal of enough, they're not looking for anything fancy from their karaoke host.

Also forgot to mention; 1-2x a summer the lead singer from Breaking Benjamin come to my Cape May gig and tears up "Don't You Forget About Me.'

Cool guy, too. For a metal head.

:D

Jeff Lynne!

I'd kill to have a Wilbury come to one of my shows.

I am sure your right, I am always my own worst critic :D . Seeing as I am from N.W. Oklahoma, we don't ever get anyone like that here. I am in "fly over country", so I just have to make do with the locals who think they know what singing is about, yet can't carry a tune in a bucket with a lid. There are those though, that make it worth while. They are actually good, but choose not to pursue it any farther than they are.

Sinbad came to my show with his entourage about 6-7 years ago. He didn't sing, but some of his entourage did. He was a real d*** to pretty much everyone for the two hours or so he was there. After he left, the bartenders told me his group had about a $300.00 tab and left a $20.00 tip.

Oh, P.S......does anyone remember Sinbad??

I had a kid who came to my shows obsessively back when I was hosting 8 gigs a week who thought himself an Elvis impersonator. He actually wasn't bad, but only 50% as good as he thought he was. Became a real @$$ over several seasons. Long story short, he ended up banned from my shows.

Constantly, CONSTANTLY asked/ demanded 2-3 songs at a turn, excessive volume, etc. He, along with a couple other singers, was the impetus behind writing my "Rules of Terry O'ke" which are Page One in all of my books.

I'm in my 8th year now and do not suffer fools gladly.
