Post subject:  Pondering the Life of a KJ

Just wanted to start a thread asking "Meaning of Life" questions as pertains to karaoke hosts like use.

Such as...

Why is it the worse the singer the harder the song?

Have I heard "Friends in Low Places" more times than Garth Brooks?

Why won't "Love Shack" die?

"Picture"? Really?

Why did Adele have to ruin my life?

Hate/ Love a song? (i.e. "American Pie": despise the song, like the 8:43 to grab a drink and a smoke.)

Fee free to add your own...

PLease stop asking me where the songslips are! Open the book, you will see. You need to book to fill out a slip so open the book! It's not that hard!

And to the person last week that used a pencil to deeply scrawl "I'm too drunk" on the colored logo on the front of my book, let's hook up, I have something for you. It's right out back!

Maybe years ago, it's not been regularly done in ages.

Rare song!

"Picture"? Really?
Seldomly done anymore, maybe once a week.

I have more Adele than most and she gets sung MAYBE once per night at this time.

Whne someone good can pull this one off, it actually often gets the entire crowd singing along. However majority of the time it falls into that first catagory.

I would have to say i'm sick of Drowning Pool - Bodies. Most overdone song i've ever heard. Done at least once a night - good thing I have a 1 time per night rule otherwise i'd hear it multiple times.

For me, it's the delusions of grandeur.

Like the worst singer in the house asking the most questions about the upcoming contest. REALLY? Like you have a chance.

Like watching my facebook newsfeed and seeing those same god-awful singers pondering which show to try out for - American Idol or The X-Factor.

Sometimes, I get complaints when it is very slow (3 or less singers) and I let everyone sing then play 1-2 songs. Those complaints always come from the worst singers. Like the rest of the bar that's not here for karaoke wants to hear you sing every 8-10 minutes. But I won't say that to them, nor will I tell them to buy something and the fact that they haven't (or never have) purchased anything gives them absolutely no right to complain about anything.

Right there with you Ripman, this is also one of my aggravations, "Where do I find the songslips"? Except the people I have ask this question, after they are given the answer to "look in the front of the book, there's a zippered pouch with pens and slips", then they continue with "well since I'm up here already, can't I just tell you the song I want, and you can just put it in for me"? Oh yeah, nice one, why don't we just go ahead and do that for you since you're such a privileged individual, why should you have to follow the procedure like everyone else. Ugh....... Then (of course) there's the "how many are ahead of me", "wow, can't you move me up, I don't know if I'm going to be here that long". Sure.... we'll do that for you, who cares about the 14 singers ahead of you, I'm sure they won't mind if I move you ahead of them, after all, you've already been here 10 minutes.... Again, Ugh.......

Why is it that usually the most regular singers – who are also one of the worst singers – have a special talent of finding the 6 and 7 min. songs in your collection?

Why are there singers that only sing one artist's songs? I have one that will only sing Neil Diamond and one that will only scream the Doors (badly).

Every singer's go to line:

"Hey, I gotta leave soon......"

How bout the singer that you cue up and they start to sing and either flub up the first line or look around and act as if they've never heard it before. Or they say this isn't the version they sing even though it's in their history and they've been singing it for at least a few years.
Or.... they ask you to start it over because they weren't ready or it still doesnt sound right after they have already sung half the song?

My favorite is the "regular" who comes in with 5 minutes left in the show and wants to be in the line up when the rotation is 15 and you've already turned away other people wanting to sing. When you tell them the rotation is full they give you attitude! love it!

This happened last Friday night......... Bachelor party: 3 very inebriated guys get up and sing and, of course, butchering the hell out of a song, (par for the course) and after the song ends one of the guys decides to flip my $400.00 shure wireless in the air like a baton(he caught it) and wonders why I berate him in front of his posse!
Same guy 5 minutes later spills a beer on one of the books and is promptly cut off from coming near myself or the stage.

I have a 30 second rule, if they get to that point, they can either forfeit or finish! Although most that need a restart are the ones that the singing comes in either before the music or like a second after.

Once my no more slips sign goes out, there is no more debating it. I MAY take the slip but tell them I promise nothing, IF by chance everyone in the rotation happens to leave before their next turn, I MIGHT be able to get them up.

the "how much to go next" while holding $2.00
someone here said $1000.00 and i liked it, so i used it. no takers yet though.

the worst singer in the room rolling their eyes as they complain to me about someone singing their song and missed a note. so bad wanna tell em their own singing is why i drink.

i put out 4-6 books and if they dont see the song, they leave that book opena dn grab the next one stacking them in a pile to look for it. then the next, and the next until all 6 books are stacked open looking for the same song, like the next book will magically be better?

dropping off a slip with some lyric of a song, no artist, no singer name, "i dont know what its called or who does it, and put it under Mike Hunt"

My rule is 15 seconds. If they even look like they may be confused or worried about the start of a song, I let them know personally, "don't worry, I give restarts up to 15 seconds."

Then proceed to ask you if you have it! "Did you see it in the books?"

I've had the lyrics put down as the song, I will usually just google that lyric & end up finding the song.
Never had the Mike Hunt, i've had Seymour Busch though!

"No, I don't drink, but thanks, anyway. But you could put it in my tip jar!"

They walk away.

Whenever I hear "Suspicious Minds," I feel like I'm caught in a trap and can't walk out.
