Hey all, I'm new to the forum and would like to get some opinions from you guys! What do you think about Karaoke Clubs. By that, I mean a place that has a public room like a normal bar on karaoke night, and also has private rooms available for rent to groups by the hour. This place would have karaoke in the main room every night, and possibly different themes for different nights of the week. What have been your experiences with these types of places? The good? The bad? I know they exist to an extent, and the private room ones mostly are in high Asian population places. We are looking at opening one and I wanted to know what you thought of them compared to the more simple concept of having a "Karaoke Night" in a pub/dive bar/etc. I have a very high level of respect for your opinions as you are the people who know what works and what doesn't in the Karaoke biz. I'd say the KJ is just as if not more integral to the success of a karaoke night as a bar owner is to the overall success of the bar. I'm sure you have some interesting opinions and I'm looking forward to reading them. Thanks in advanced! Martin Elkins |

There may be some "Karaoke Box Clubs" here in LA that speak English, but I've not seen any.. The few I've looked into were not really interested in 6'3" 220 lb anglos.. in fact I had to bend down to get in the door.. and then, nobody to talk to... |

I guess the point is, we want to open one here in FL and I'm trying to assess in general if it is a good idea. We are doing other market research as well, but I wanted to get a feel from the people who actually know karaoke and the industry. We've thought about the BYO style, but we've decided on a full bar model instead, given we are willing to give our all to this concept and make it work regardless of the effort needed. I'm the type of person who thrives on seeing the fruits of my labor, so I "don't mind" working 50-80 hour weeks if it gets the job done. My concern is, even with that level of effort, can we thrive? Is the concept sound enough? I'm not getting into this to "survive" and "scrape by," we're talking a thriving national network of Karaoke clubs in the future here, built from the ground up.... |

What JD is trying to say in a politically correct way is that most clubs as you describe cater to the Asian market. Tough to make money at one if you are a Geijin... |

There are couple of Private Room karaoke places in Seattle. I have only been to one though. Went with a dozen friends, all of us karaoke people. We gave it a legitimate shot but we ultimately ended up just eating, drinking, and catching up with each other. We all prefer bar style over box style. -Chris |

If you are in Florida then stop in at Kroaky's Karaoke in Sarasota. It is owned by a couple that lived in Japan for years and started this karaoke room concept about 3-4 years ago. |

This type of club wouldn't interest me much as a singer. If I want to sing with my friends in a private room, we can do that in our homes. When going out to sing I prefer to be with my friends in a crowd of others. It's far more satisfying singing with a larger party, and my friends and I are more impressed by the reception from strangers than from each other. We also enjoy listening to others from outside our group singing. We couldn't do that if everyone is hiding in a private room. |

Went to KROAKY'S years ago and didnt enjoy it that much. Nothing against the club or anything, I just prefer the bar scene. I enjoy listening to other people I don't know sing and vice versa. To each his own:) |
