I know, I know... You're all gonna get upset with me... and I'll just have to live with it, I guess.
I've had one of my better singers bug me for months about getting the song "A Couple More Years"... preferably the Waylon Jennings version... but Dr. Hook's version if necessary.
I've searched everywhere I can think of, and listed it as one of my "wants" at Karaoke Version ... all to no avail... and I got tired of searching
So... I found the instrumental / backing track on iTunes earlier today, and put Builder Studio to work...
This is most likely highly illegal.... (Guilty as charged, Your Honor.).... but it'll get this fellow off my back for now.
Another of my singers is a big Jack Scott fan... and wants to sing everything Jack ever produced/wrote/sang. Unfortunately, there only seems to be three of his songs commercially available in Karaoke.
There are other songs... mostly "oldies" that have been repeatedly requested, with the same search results... and I'm thinking of doing the same with some of them... IF I can find decent backing tracks...
Comments??

I do know alot of people that do make their own music. They are called musicians and when different people from different bands get together they make all kinds of music and mess up each others songs on purpose and for fun. Sometimes new songs come out of it, . We are staying at an RV park for while living full time in our RV and around us we have one full band (working on their 5th album) and lots of single musicians. You should hear what happens when Thom decides to set up karaoke/open mike nite. Starts off karaoke but quickly leads to lots of other things with music.

Don't know all the legalities but if you made it and you aren't selling it and he is the only guy that sings it what's the harm. I believe only the original artist could come after you, and if you had never posted the fact here no one would know!

I've made hundreds of them, for my oen personal use, and no one has come looking for me yet. Make as many of them as you want to.....just don't put a Sound Choice logo in them and you ahould be good to go. If you're not making big money doing it; no one is going to come after you because there is nothing to gain from filing a law suit against you.
Now if you start selling them on the internet and the big stars find out that you made a million dollars selling karaoke versions of their songs; Then you might get noticed by the powers that be.

Earl – for crying out loud, you’re in Ontario, Canada. Laws are more relaxed there than here in US. Our long arm of the law won’t be able to reach & touch you. Just kidding, you guys. Jeezz. What do I know? I want to hear Mr. Harrington’s opinion before I pipe in my comments.

I wish I knew how to do this. I am a musician and I have recreated many obscure instrumental tracks for people over the years. If I knew how to put some lyrics on a screen to some of these instrumentals, well that would be just great!

I get the impression that the tracks that Earl was looking for weren't licensed or produced by karaoke mfrs., so they would have nothing to say about it anyway. Even if they did license/produce, it sounds like Earl used the original track, not one of theirs. Again, none of their business. Thus, karaoke mfrs/producers are excluded from any problem causing.
That being said, the music publishers/owners certainly have the right to sue, but not the inclination. I can't imagine Sony bothering with a one-use, non-reproduced or distributed track. Add to that the music was paid for, not stolen. I just don't think they would care- for now, anyway. With all the muck that certain companies are stirring up, anything can happen in the future.
Go to it, Earl...

I can knock one it in under an hour these days; as long as it isn't a really loooong song. You should check out Karaoke Builder Studio. I've tried 3 or 4 different programs and this one seems to be the best of them.

I wasn't particularly worried about the legalities, nor of having an artist or manufacturer come after me...
I'm certainly not selling the track... simply using it in my own show... for one particular singer.
My main purpose was simply to express my frustration at not being able to find tracks for my singers... I know Karaoke Version is doing their best at trying to keep up with our requests... but, without a high demand, I doubt I'll ever see them produce one of my requests.
What few manufacturers are left are likely so busy trying to keep up with latest releases, that to bring back requested songs from the 50s, 60s & 70s would be a very long shot at best.
Having said all that.... it was kinda fun surprising my friend on Saturday night with the "Couple More Years" track...
Now, if I could just find some of those Jack Scott backing tracks... PML

Earl, any of these from Amazon help you out?
Thanks Johnny, but I have those...
Strange that there aren't more Jack Scott Karaoke tracks available. The guy had a ton of top-40 hits in the late 50s & early 60s. Here's an interesting quote from his bio:
Scott had more U.S. singles (19), in a shorter period of time (41 months), than any other recording artist - with the exception of The Beatles
I've sent an email to Jack. Don't know if it'll do any good, but it can't hurt.
