Post subject:  How do you buy/store your USED originals?

I am interested in the opinions of folks on how they prefer to buy/store their Original karaoke discs. The majority of the discs I buy are in the vinyl sleeves. But I have recently picked up two large collections that are almost completely in the original crystal cases. These of course take up significantly more storage space as well as increase the weight dramatically. That latter is less of an issue since they won't get moved too often. But I still consider it for storage.

For my own purposes, I prefer to use vinyl sleeves to keep the weight and space required down.

Just wondering if I decrease the resale value buy taking discs out of crystal cases and putting in sleeves. I generally keep some or all of the inserts depending on what the inserts are - lyrics sheets I keep, and I will put the one page cover insert on the back side of the sleeve for flair. I don't usually keep the back insert.

But when it comes to collectors or other buyers, do you prefer to have the original crystal case with all the inserts?

Sorry Chris, misread it. We keep ours in jewel cases.

***DO NOT*** make this a legality discussion.

"Storage" could apply to ODB or shifters and has absolutely nothing to do with how you run your show.

Slimline jewel cases at the show. Jewel cases are the only storage medium that will not damage a disc.
Flip books/binders can scratch just inserting a disc into a sleeve and can actually crack discs after time if really loaded.

Since I don't ever need to pull them out for actual daily/show use, I store mine in shoe boxes, standing up on their edge. I find it very safe, and easy to sort and re-sort for inventory purposes. They fit nicely in a ladies shoe box without the lid. Before I store them I clean both sides of the cd to remove any damaging grit. I find it way less damaging than pulling them out of binders (past the zipper), and they don't stick together like the sleeves in cd cases do. Best of all, way less storage space. You can buy a shoe box cubby hole orginizer and store them quite neatly in your closet.

I prefer the regular jewel cases, less chance of the discs getting scratched or cracked. Though you could switch over to the slim line ones if space and weight are a real issue. You can get them bulk online fairly cheap so cost isn't even that much of an issue. I'm willing to put up with the added weight and space requirements to keep the discs safe and if organized properly, it's easier to find a disc when you need it.

@mrmarog - I have 5 of the felt covered wood storage cases like what you have in the upper left of your picture. Those are my favorite cases and I would love to find more. I picked up all 5 of these cases along with the disc buys and can't find anything but aluminum ones on the net. I like the wood cases over the metal/plastic versions because the wood ones don't flex and come apart at the seams.

But I use vinyl sleeves and write the disc number on each sleeve.

I very seldom purchase a used disc, but I keep all my discs in vinyl sleeves.

I use Vaultz cases. The "pages" have 4 slots per side for a total of 8 discs per page. The cases say they have a 200 disc capacity, but they will hold 5-10 "pages" more than that.

I try to keep the discs separated by mfr and in numerical/series order.

Back when I was ODB... I used to carry about 6 or 7 cases with me to shows. Now I have about 30 of those cases full. They don't leave my office.

chris i have the same style case pluse i have a 800 disc case that splits in half, and manage to cram about 1300+ disc's in it using paper sleeves.... it's also on rollers and has a pull up handle... "road ready" is the brand name.... but it's frick'n heavy, about as heavy as my amp rack with 2 amps in it.

i'm even considering buying a fire/gun safe rated at 1hr burn time... but do i really need it as technology is changing.

i also have 4 of the 520 disc cases off ebay. and have 2 full and filling the 3rd one now until i find another 800 disc case.

we use the aluminum cases that have hanging vinyl sleeves, each case holds 1200 discs. We have made some wood trays that fit the bottom and come about 2 inches up the sides to reinforce them and allow them to be stacked safely. This has proven to be the safest and most space efficient method for us.

What I am hearing so far is that keeping the original jewel cases does seem to apply.

The reason I was asking was primarily for re-sale value. I personally could care less if a disc I buy (new or used) comes in a jewel case. When I buy anotehr KJ collection, it is almost always stored in vinyl sleeves.

I know Lonnie likes the jewel cases and I have seen a few others post pics with jewel cases on shelves.

I like vinyl sleeves so I am dumping the jewel cases for all of these discs I have, but I am keeping the inserts. The sleeves I use are doublesided so I slide the inserts on the other side.

I store mine in a corner in the basement.
The tarp helps prevent water damage.

Those that I bought in jewels, stay in jewels. I always keep things in the original case or packaging. Funny thing, I just gave all my original CDs away. Don't have room for them in my move to CA and I haven't played a CD in many years!

I use the same, though from the days when we carried them everywhere, they are rather battered and covered in duct tape.

When purchasing second hand if in bulk, I would pay more for a cataloged collection (book listing the disc number and where to find them in the case). Jewel cases would neither add nor detract the value for me.

I keep extra originals and backup discs in binders, with each one felt-backed.

Inserts are kept in a filing cabinet divided by mfr. When I get jewel case build-up a sell a bunch on Craigslist.

i store mine in binders. i don't care about sorting them by manu, i find it easier to just number them in the order they are acquired. each binder holds 240, i name the binders by letter (binder A, binder B...) then each disc sequencially 1-240. at the end of the file name when i rip i have the software put the location (eg, A-124) so if i need to re-rip i can just go to binder A disc 124 and do so. i like it because if i am out to SC8552 and then i buy SC2312, i would have to move all the rest around. this way i just put it at the end in the next available spot and add the hub sticker with the location on it (as seen in the picture)

Post subject:  Re: How do you buy/store your USED originals?

I just finished a monumental re-sort/inventory of my discs. With the exception of my Sound Choice discs, everything is placed in sequential order by manufacturer now. I have the wooden carry cases I mentioned plus a few binders. I also left the SC Foundations and Bricks in their original binders.

My Sound Choice is an exception because of the silly auditing stuff. I have more than doubled the size of my Sound Choice collection since my audit so I have kept all the new discs separate for easy marking. Should be doing a mini-audit this week. Then I will place all the Sound Choice in sequential order as well.
