If it's a BYOK what do they need you for? Might as well stay home and do karaoke in your own livingroom.

This is a good topic and one I've thought about in the past. Since I'm about to start hosting and I have a fairly large library that I just purchased and ripped, but no Sound Choice, I've been wondering the same thing.

In preparation for me starting to host soon I've been visiting some local shows. Some songs that are being sung locally are:

Bob Seger - Turn The Page - (this one has legs and just doesn't seem to want to go away)
Sara Evans - Suds In The Bucket (great song, I still love it)
Tom Jones - I Who Have Nothing
Etta James - At Last
Elton John - Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me
Billy Joel - Piano Man
Sinatra - Summer Wind
Sinatra - My Way
Steppinwolf - Born To Be Wild
Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline
Johnny Cash - Ring Of Fire
Kid Rock/Cheryl Crow - Picture
Carrie Underwood - Before He Cheats

Country is very popular around here and there are a bunch of songs I just don't
remember right now. That's just a few that I could think of.

George Jones-He Stopped Loving Her Today
Marty Robbins-A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation
Ray Price-For the Good Times
Elvis-Teddy Bear
Blake Shelton-Ol' Red
-like I said-lots of country. As for how many songs you need? I have no idea, I wish I knew, it would help me a lot. Also some Doors songs get sung from time to time too.

I could get by with 50 tracks;;; if those 50 were the ones asked for on a given night..

With me it's what it is more so than how many. Even with a 20 something crowd the later 60s to the 90s in rock and more modern country pop is where I get hit the most. My 20 somethings were doing The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Matchbox 20 and some more modern female country stuff this past weekend. I'll get requested newer stuff ONLY if a regular asks for it. Way too many one timers come in wanting to get a bunch of stuff only to never see them again and it never gets played. I find that only 200-250 songs have been hit in the 100's and there is a huge drop after that. Most of the newer stuff (more modern) has hits of less than 10 and I'm talking stuff I've had for a few years. One of my oldest regulars does "Hotel California" as her top song and the youngest people do stuff very similar.

I once went to a show with 36 songs. The only songs sung from the list were Pour some sugar on me, These boots were made for walking and oop's I did it again. My other half sang fit but you know it but the host had to look up the disc and track code for that one so i'm guessing it wasn't often done. Really good night as well. Lots of repeat songs but the host ran a fair rotation.

Have a couple of cdg players, and make it a BYOK.....so the answer is 0....... ........after awhile, they'll catch on...

They don't get sung at my shows. A successfuly show could EASILY get away with 500 songs minimum (probably less) provided you knew exactly what your crowd wanted - that is key. The Stogie provided as must haves would be mostly dead songs in our crowd as they rarely get done enough to be considered karaoke standards (again at my show only, across town these songs may be all anyone is looking for). We have a lot more hard rock/pop & newer country.

Often times it's not feasible for a host to invest in songs that are only going to be done by one person or they want specific manus that the host don't offer. Plus they don't get to sing in front of a live crowd at home on a stage with lighting (some shows) over a nice PA system (some shows). Many reasons to BYOK!

There are others in addition to the ones I posted above that get sung here regularly, but I just can't think of them and some I'm not that familiar with so I forget those right away. The ones aI posted earlier for some reason are popular around here, but it also varies from bar to bar in this area. We have a lot of older people so a lot of older music is sung around here too. It's been my experience that at any given time, there are about 300 songs that are primarily used, though titles may change as the times do. I do many different types of venues, so I can't offer a solid top 10 must haves. They change with the venue.

You could easily do shows just using KJTools 10 disc set with 209 well selected, fairly well produced reproductions.

Man I am SO glad I have a primarily younger crowd by comparison. I don't think I could go through an entire night of the old stuff like this night after night.

We have a lot of retired people who live here year round and a lot who come down here in the winter. Some places it's nearly ALL old people like ELKS, VFWs, American Legion etc. I need to visit several more local places in the next couple of weeks and take a pad of paper with me.

i could get away with 500 songs if i needed to. Top 10 MOST-sung songs LATELY might be: 1. Don't Stop Believin- Journey 2. Livin On A Prayer- Bon Jovi 3. Wanted Dead or Alive- Bon Jovi 4. Sweet Caroline- Neil Diamond 5. F&%K You- Cee Lo Green 6. Somebody Like You- Adele 7. Killing me Softly- Fugees 8. Summer Nights- Travolta/ John 9. It Will Rain- Bruno Mars 10. Paradise- Coldplay mostly tourists singing.. but then again..it's been getting slower than in past years...

Stogie...if the KJ's in your area are nice and use a digitized system they can print a report listing the top sung songs using any parameters you request. I can not give a general list as the songs do differ LOTS from venue to venue. I have seen some very good shows that are ran with 2000 songs total. Most of the "animal clubs" (VFW.Elks club, moose lodges ect) tend to have a more "static" list of songs requested than we have requested at our regular shows (however we strongly encourage our singers to try new songs regularly and my DH is a "disc whore")

How many songs you need depends greatly on the venue location and the type of singers you have coming in. I like to err on the side of having.....everything. -Chris

@Ed G: I remember a few years ago on this forum that we discussed The Cat's Meow and their carefully selected songs for maximun party fun. Seems like a great idea for an always changing customer base, but probably not for the average neighborhood bar.
