Well, I just got the schedule from the Youth Foundation and starting at the end of this month, I am going to be "teaching" karaoke to k-5 elementary school kids during the after-school "Power Hours". Two 45 minute classes per day at one school on Mon & Tues and the same at another school on Wed & Thurs.

I'm looking for ideas (I have quite a few myself) and dialogue to help me create a lesson plan that can address five year olds, through pre-teens.

I know all about how fun karaoke is

, but I am also looking to focus on the positive aspects of personality development such as public speaking, singing (of course), reading (the lyrics, again - of course), being an attentive audience, reviewing/critiquing, choosing appropriate songs with consideration, courtesy and awareness of others.

If you had an opportunity to "teach" three, 7 week courses to grade school kids?

That's a very interesting twist on finding a new gig.
I like it.
I would suggest asking their teachers what songs they are singing in class or preparing for their holiday programs and getting or making karaoke versions of those songs for them to practice.

I would also suggest using a microphone dedicated to the children only and a separate microphone for yourself.
Slobbering, nose picking, booger eating, young school children are a prime source for colds and flu.
Almost everytime I volunteered to work an elementary school event I picked up some kind of bug, yet I can share a microphone at a bar all night long and be fine (most of the time).
Once my kids moved on to middle school they fell ill far less often too.

I deal with the younger crowd often..
The recuring theme I see is that the young ones have been told they can't sing..
So your job is to change the perception.. (VERY IMPORTANT)
Make it fun, encourage them, and allow them to succeed through the effort..

priming the next generation of bar karaoke singers.....sweet! the school play songs that Earthling mentioned sounds like a great idea to start with. last elementary bit i did it was Justin Bieber, Hannah Montana, and of all things Thriller, Billy Jean & Beat It..........rinse and repeat for 4 hours

Sorry to sidetrack this thread but more than half the men I see go into a restroom do NOT wash their hands. I'd be money those same guys pick their nose and I'm sure more than one eats their boogers!

sounds like a great program....From dealing with kids around here we find just encouraging kids to sing and making sure they are applauded for it the biggest thing you can do for self esteem and to help reading skills....Often we find group songs will get the shy ones up to try faster just like with adults. Watch for acceptable songs for children whenever you do shows...you will be suprised at how many know songs popular before they were born. Have Fun

Don't forget.......gotta teach them how to drink. Should they learn to drink responsively, sing decently, and be able to drive home, or help the venue finacially, by getting sloppy drunk, and the fine singing that accompanies it... , but making sure they have somebody to drive them home.
