iCroons used to list songs and the disk#'s - couldn't help but notice that only downloads are listed - the disks are gone. Searched the forums here for an answer - nothing.

I hope it's just an updating error, otherwise he's rendered the site worthless.

i think they are probably being sued by karaoke manu's for (my guess anyways).

probably trademark infringement for displaying their disc numbers for sound choice and others.... or trade dress for the numbering system.....

Well it looks like the disc numbers are back in except for 1 thing

There are no SC or CB listed so it looks like they got the shaft from these two.
It seems to be that they are only listing songs that can be D/L. Which means that SC and CB would be out of the picture as we all know that they don't allow this!

I got a reply from Latshaw about this and they said they're having to rebuild the archive database, and admitted that one of the mistakes they originally made was filling in missing gaps with data from Songbookslive. One of the songbook software makers (they wouldn't say who but they did say it wasn't KJpro) was threatening to sue them over proprietary data. Evidently this company from the UK puts incorrect information purposely in their database as a way to catch people using it publicly. All of the Sound Choice, Chartbuster and DK records will return. They just need to rebuild the database with their original collection (which covers all the major stuff) and then selectively pick collections to fill in the gaps from people they personally know and other more reliable sources. This is all over a few records that were incorrect in the first place and the handy work of some very crafty people in the UK who wouldn't provide them with a list of these bogus records and simply trying to make their job more difficult.

It sounds like it's all over a company trying to keep it's competitors from stealing their hard work and intellectual property.

I think its a gray area considering where the data came from, but I'm glad to see iCroons sorting these things out in the early stages.

My understanding was that information such as Artist, Title, Lyrics, etc could be distributed under General Public License - meaning it can be freely distributed, but you cannot charge for it.

KJ Pro and Other Songbook Companies can NOT sue for using the data from their songbook databases. It is GPL info. Especially KJPro, Seeing as how they have put their database on a public website for anyone to see for free. Icroons does not charge for the info so the songbook companies have no legal leg to stand on.

Although, I was under the impression that Bob Latshaw wanted to re-do the Database anyway because of how poorly organized and how many incorrect listings there are in all the songbook companies databases.

That I could understand since most of the canned database companies suck!

That's the thing. They can't sue over data that is in the public domain. Real names of real karaoke tracks can't be copyright, but Latshaw said they added records like a song named "Ziggy the Poodle", which never existed in the karaoke world, and this is the data they are laying claim to. I kinda question whether you can sue over data that isn't even real, but I guess its better to be safe than sorry.

Anyhow, I asked Latshaw last night how they planned to rebuild it if they no longer could trust data on Songbookslive to fill in missing data, and I was told they are starting with their own collection of about 140,000 songs which are all properly named and include complete collections from Sound Choice, DK, and other major brands, but for all those rarer songs, they will require volunteers to actually send them any song they want included. This way they can verify that every single song in the database actually exists. They said it may take a couple of years to get it even close to complete, but it's the only way to have a verified database of songs that they know 100% sure exist, and when you start with a properly named database, and only add properly named songs, it will be the much more accurate than anything currently out there. I wish them luck. I'd like to eventually see them use it to integrate into their other apps for accurate automated renaming.

The facts about KJPro are:

There used to be a program called KaraokeSpigot that did songbooks. Well, he quit, and KJPro started with that database. They've of course added to them after, but that's what happened with KJPro.
