Singing Karaoke and signing autographs.. An accident really, as I had not been out in a while, (to sing) and my buddy calls me up last week, tells me, "I'll pick you up in 10". Next thing I know, there he is, and off we go to his show.. Lucky for me the economy has killed karaoke completely.. and there I was singing on a 6 rotation.. But wait, there's more.. I never turned in a slip, so I figure, sip an ice cold delicious beverage, kick back and enjoy.. There was no joy.. Second singer finishes, I get called up.. (WTF?) I guess I was lucky that Billy Joel was not there to take his turn.. so I did his round.. Nobody threw beer bottles, so I suspect it was ok.. After a few songs, I started getting requests.. but I stayed and sang anyway.. A good time was had by all.. even me..

Sounds like a good night! I went out yesterday to celebrate my birth of 49 years ago! Sang a couple of songs well don't recall the others... But had a great time!

Monday ( I'm off) I went to another host's show. As a host myself, I have picked up the unfortunate habit of thinking professionally instead of just having fun. Guess what? I did not have a single negative thought about the showto which I went. Since the host did a great job, I was able to lose the pro attitude, kick back, and have a blast! Life can be good.

I had two karaoke host (friends of mine) from other shows around town come in tonight. 1 of them came in stating their girlfriend wanted to go to a place that had 'newer' stuff because it seems no one else does, the other wanted 'good' sound. Funny thing is BOTH of those hosts worked for other companies that were working tonight as well.

Isn't it strange how some karaoke hosts, if they know you are also a KJ, will treat you as some sort of threat to their business success, while others - the self-confident ones - welcome you with open arms.

I don't get out much, but I wouldn't ever introduce myself as another KJ. Chances are, if it is somewhere in my county, they know me anyways. I don't treat KJs differently at my shows, despite the fact that they think I am stupid when they ask questions like "What else do you do for a living?" or "How much do you make?" etc.

Try being a "guest" at your own show. My brother has been in this with me from the start. I have a couple of others that can sit in as well. We (Me and whoever) usually both work but sometimes I go and just be part of the crowd. Early on I and whoever almost had some knock down drag outs. Away from general view of course. I've learned that they might do things a little different than I and there isn't one way to do it. They have their own fans so they must be doing something right. It really takes a lot to get me to say anything now. I don't mind at all if other KJs come around. I've only had one person come to the show and try to steal it. They were quite offended when I banned them for a month, swearing they didn't do anything. I and the owners are tight, though, and I got the entire scoop. They came back in one more time "just to show they weren't there to do anything" and haven't seen them since. They are welcome back if they want.

They are welcome back if they want. That's a lesson I learned early on.... it doesn't matter how good or bad the KJ is, if you try to "step on toes" - that KJ is going to hear about it. Kind of like Miranda Rights - "Anything you say can and will be used against you".

We have other KJ's check out our shows nightly. It's kinda funny because while we are working they are either trying to get our gigs and point out our flaws (rotation, songs, etc..). Our response is..If the guy was so good, and had a following why is he not working? Why is he only charging $75 a show?
Lastly, we've also found that the Kj's that try to steal gigs and customers ALSO steal songs...
BUY YOUR SONGS!!!

Belated Happy Birthday, Phill Last month a young kj (mid 20’s) told me to adjust this & that, a little reverb, a little bass, followed by “I’m a kj too”. Being polite I pretended to touch, not adjust some knobs, started the music & he said that’s a lot better. On his way out he pass-out flyers, info about his show, inside & outside putting flyers on car windshields. I found out later from my manager he tried to steal my show. Frea*ing idiot! I went to his show to tell him I didn’t appreciate the flyer thing. As soon as I entered & heard the sound I decided not to say anything at all. Competition from this kj is an understatement. Definitely a pirate, using the old Cavs jb199, his books generic cavs style (60k songs) no manus listed, just 5 number identifiers & a pair of 10” Optimus speakers (formerly Realistic by RadioShack). I went up & told him to please give me less reverb & less bass. He replied: "I know you - trying to get even?” I said “No, not at all. I just want to sound better!”

This happened to us more than twice already. I've got the words typed up & cut to size. With my small bottle of Elmer's glue I'm ready for next time. Thanks!

That wouldn't go over so well here. I don't know about the rest of Canada but here in Alberta bars are strictly forbidden from giving away free alcohol or any kind of promition type stuff unless it's for charity

-James It's not a real promotion. It's messing with the fliers people put on the cars outside your club promoting another club. Once they get the gist of Hey, this isn't happening, they won't promote at your show again!

When I was hosting (last April) I would on occasion, have as many as 4 KJ's in attendance at my shows. My location had seating for 110 people and during season (Nov to May) you had to have reservations to get a seat. I am very sure that they would come to see how I did it. When I would see them walk in the door I would put their name in rotation, and maybe even cue a song for them that I remembered the last time the showed up.
The competition does not have to be hostile, and I personally have helped several KJ's with problems before/during/after their shows. A little help can go a long way especially when YOU need some someday. I have even swapped dupe cdg's with KJ's, and in the end we both have had bigger song selections. That is a win/win in my book. Ok so he is the competition, but he is only competion if he runs a BETTER show than you. Stay on top of your game, and provde what your customers want.......more singing time (thru efficiency)......more good singers.......great sound to the singer (monitors tweaked perfectly). Great sound to the room is important, but great sound to the singer is supreme!!!!!

I've been lucky, my last big show was for Yamaha, 2,000 peeps, short rotation though.. My little system was OK, but I added some powered speakers to fill in the countryside.. And after dark, so nobody knew me.. We churned the crowd with free t-shirts for a while, and alternated between the DJ and me as KJ.. Fun time..

He fill in for me the past month while I was upgrading and everynight I went to his show he was inform them I was coming back...what was funny he said he was glad...because he need a break... ..but honestly bashing another KJ never helps you out it only makes you look scared of losing your job'

I had a great time on Saturday night. A bit quiet in the pub so I sang my head off, told rubbish jokes, talked about my holiday, did a quiz question which someone found the anwswer to despite me telling everyone that it was pointless scouring Google as the answer wasn't there, but it was. I lost £5 on that. I did a picture quiz using Siglos scrolling thing that went down a bomb, no one got all the answers to this so I saved another £5. Clock stoppped in the pub so I ended up going well over my time, got paid extra, left at 1.30am got home 15 minutes later at 2.45am. Storming evening!!!!! Sunday wasn't so great.
