Okay, I need some advice.
I want to write a few songs so that I can finish off what I started in the studio.
I really struggle though, when it comes time to write the lyrics and the melody line (The guy I work with supplies all the music, and that is not a problem for him).
When he gets me a track to work with, I suck at writing the song.
The first song I wrote, came out without a problem, 15 mins, but now I just can't seem to put anything down. I just don't feel inspired, I guess. To me, it all the lyrics that I write seem stupid (and I guess overcoming that would be step #1).
Is there anything that anyone can suggest....how to make ideas flow...what do you do when it comes time to write??
I appreciate any help Thanks bunches
Roo

It has to do with timing and indeed, having the inspiration.
What kind of songs?
I write country which sometimes is easier since you can sometimes find a "hook" that gets it rolling.
When I am blocked, I just set it aside and go on with something else.. I don't worry about it... Then a few days, hours, sometimes just minutes later, something just snaps into my head.
and remember the K.I.S.S. system works great for writting.... try to get to creative and it can be a mess.. Keep It Simple and it is amazing how nice it can be.

Hey!
Thanks for your input.
I am leaning towards more kinda popish stuff, kinda punkish like Avril, but I also like Celine Dion types of songs.
I just have to sit at the piano one day and get myself a song.
It is kinda hard too when you don't write your own music. I belive that writing your own stuff truly comes from the music and the lyrics. I don't konw what is going through his mind when he comes up with a instrumental backing for me.
And for the keep it simple, I can't agree more! I guess it just comes with time, patience and experience! Thanks for your help

I have been writing since I was... around 9 years old... Back then I wrote sitting at my piano, but since I have switched to my guitar.... I must be odd, because, the minute I pick it up... words just come to me... I don't write anything down, I just hit record on a tape player, (or whatever year I am in:) now it is my computer:) I hit record, and play and sing... I finish, and then listen and wrote down what I sang, and it doens't often get changed or altered.... I understand it must be hard when you aren't writing the instrumental backing yourself...
I have worked with a few artists writing lyrics/melody, and singing them. (were you around ritisroo, when I did that original odd one, with the fellow from germany? I could swear you were) Anyways, I do the exact same thing.. I don't write lyrics down.. I play the song, for the FIRST time hearing it.. the VERY first time, hit record, and sing... whatever comes to my head.... I am the kind of person that always sings along to instrumentals, and improv lyrics as I go along.. (or does everyone do that?) However, I don' write pop type things (think folky for me:) and I don' have the slightest clue what a pop song should SOUND like. SO, yes, I basically just babbled on and on without helping you at all didn't I? Hmm, a logn time ago didn't you post a link with a couple orginals of your on it? I keep thinking that, and I remember them being quite good:)
But basically, that is what I do when I "write".... I also am never stressed to actually WRITE a song... I just feel the need, and then do it... I also never start with a hook, but I realize a lot of people do...I am no help babe:) But I tried:) (And I would be happy to have a look at whatever you HAVE come up with, if you are ever stuck:)

Gilly,
Thank you so much for your help. I have not heard your song with the Guy from Germany (I don't think), but I did hear some of those songs you wrote when you were younger.
The first song I wrote was kinda like that. I had it for a week (the instrumental backing). I took it with me on the LRT, bus, listened to it at work, and just kinda humed a melody, and thought a lot.
I was at the studio fridays and thursday night, just sat down, and boom, the song came. Now, I just can't do it. I feel stressed at the studio when he makes a song, hands me some paper, and says, here you go . I mean, I just can't do that.
I have tried just singing to the music, and my melody lines that I have in my head (but don't show him), ususally turn out to be the same as his.
I don't really have anything right now, but I think that I may sit down and try again, and maybe after the break I have taken, something will come to me.
Thanks for your input. I totally love your music!

I don't believe in the KISS method when writing a song. I just write and write, then go back and cut and cut. The more I can paruse over, the better.
Inspiration is tough, because it's a different process for everybody. My inspiration is to just turn off the radio in the car and go on a full throttle babble. Eventually I get to something I like, then I record it on my voice recorder on the cell phone.
One suggestion I DO have is to actually make a flow chart of the song. Know where you start and where you want to get to in the song. A understanding of the basic structure may help in the creative process because it feels more organized.

When I write, I usually do lyrics first. I'll be sitting, walking, driving, whatever, and words just come. When I get to paper, I write it down. The tune comes later for me.
Back in the day, I could rattl off a few songs in a week. Nowdays, it may be weeks or months to get one done. I guess I've become more patient, or retrospective with age.
With the music, it may take me a couple years to get a song ready to record. I'd hate to be under a contract with deadlines!
