Post subject: | Rethinking my rotation... |
After reading all the rotation talk around here, I thought I'd try something different at my show last night. This is usually a popular show with 25-35 singers in rotation. What I have been doing in the past is just going with a straight rotation, with new singers going in at the end of the rotation. If they turned in a slip close to the end, they got to sing rather quickly, if they turned it in at the beginning the wait was long. The downsides to this were that the folks that got there early got to get up and sing right away, but then had to sit and stew while the rotation got longer and longer and longer. So last night I tried something different that I had seen discussed here. I use a bulletin board with tacks to keep song slips in order at my shows. So, like usual, I just took slips and put them in order--first come first served. However, once someone sang, I put their next song at the end of the line. If they didn't have a song turned in, that was ok too, they just went to the end of the line when they turned one in. New singers also went to the end of the line. There really was no rotation, but it seemed to work rather well. Granted, when there are 30 singers, there is no short cut to the mic, but for the earlier singers, it wasn't nearly as frustrating. Under this system they might get 2 or three quick trips to the mic early before the rotation...er I mean...singers list...really starts to fill up! I think this may be the way I go rom now on in venues with high singer turnout, but for my shows where I usually have a lower singer count, I may stil go with the ol whiteboard and rotation system! |

As has been mentioned many times on here, there is no one right way to do a rotation, but it's cool that you're trying something new. I hope it works out for you. |
