QUESTION: I am driving down the road singing my heart out to some of my favorite songs that have never made it to Karaoke disks...Can someone tell me how I can kill the vocals and replace them with my voice and is this an ok thing to do if I want to record them? As we all know some of the best songs never hit the big time and will prolly never see a karaoke disk...but that sure doesn't keep us from wanting desperatly to sing them...

I think I have read about some doing this in the Showcase so I know someone knows how...helppppppppppppppppppppp....ty

Connie, you hit that nail on the head! My understanding is that you 'possibly' could use voice cancelling 'if' the recording was such that the channel with the voice was distinct and could be isolated and eliminated (I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I understand the principle :) . But I also understand that most 'voices' occur over multiple channels making it difficult to eliminate... anyway, I'm sure somebody with the skinny on this will fill us in. I feel the same way though... I have a lot of songs that I would like to get without the vocals.... I would probably only use them here and not even try to take them to a K-club... (if it's LEGAL and ETHICAL of course!)

Connie, I have a question for you (you can email me specific if you would like) What is the recording setup you are using now? I use creative recorder, mixer, and play center through my PC currently. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)))))

Thank you,

Bill (Whynot!)

There are a couple voice cancelation products out there and nearly all of them are dependent on the vocals being set dead center (or real close) within the mix. This means that when you listen to a song w/ headphones on and close your eyes (seems to help when I do this) the singer is dead in the center of the mix and doesn't move from side to side.

How most voice cancelation products work is they take one channel (say right) and reverse the phase (like hooking up a speaker backwards). When you play back the sounds anything in both channels cancels out. Unfortunately this would typically include the drums which are also located dead center in most mixes. To compensate for this they 'notch out' only the frequencies the vocals use - leaving everything else intact. I hope this makes sense to the non technical people.

Now, how to do it...

Software
Audacity has instructions on how to do this manually on their website.
There is a product called RipEditBurn.
And a product called MyVoice.

Do a google search on voice removal software and there will be lots of options that come up.

BTW, many (but not all) CD+G players have a vocal eliminator that works to varying degrees.

Ok, Whynot...

Sounds like we are using the same thing...I just upgraded my soundcard to sound blaster live, I installed the software that came with....There is a program within that Daddy used long ago called "WAVE STUDIO"..........It is a very simple recording program...I opened the play center part you mentioned, just once and have left it alone since...I had many issues going on when I tried to record with other programs, mainly being that anything I changed on my volumes at any point would affect my sub as well...meaning it changed volumes there too.. I originally hooked up thru a small mixer PHONIC mm1202, but it was causing many issues so at the prompting of ALLSTAR, I killed that...it's going to ebay...I found it was not like working with my PHONIC powerpod I use when I do a show.

So now I am hooked up from rsq 3 drawer and speakers with rca plugs to my line in (lil plug) on sound card....I am not using cep at all tho I do have it...I do not know how to use it worth a flip...so whatever the wave studio gets from my mic, (I use a sennheiser e815s) and my karaoke machine is what I post...I convert them to mps by way of music match as it is fast and easy...I do use headphones usually cuz everyone says we should...

I posted 3 songs (which I immediatly killed cuz they sucked ) that I recorded when my lil mixer was hooked up....the recordings I am getting now sound good from here...so I hope they do out there too...Wave studio allows you to go in and add echos and volume changes, but I am recording both vocals and music on one track (don't know how to separate them yet) so the volume changer won't fix it if the vocals are too soft...so I just do a little short test run to make sure volume levels are ok before I record a song as you know they vary so much disk by disk...

Several of the songs I have up were recorded live at karaoke, as one of my favorite kjs records me when I go sing and gives me the disk...(way cool) but with the hurricanes etc, that hasn't been happening the last 3 or 4 weeks.

The last 4 I have posted were recorded as I have previously described here...with wave studio...I did I free trial period on a mix program called Mixcraft...I think of all the mix programs I have tried it was the most user friendly, but I am happy enuf for now to record as I have told you....till I learn more about mixing...and you are asking the wrong person if you want help hun...I am just a baby at this...Only been here about 6 or so weeks...Tho I go to karaoke 2-3 times per week and been singin since I was a kid...I am a singer not a mixer, lol...I sing for fun...

I kj part time and am good at mixing live and can hear when something is wrong, but those lil mix programs like cep are a whole other box of crackers....The good thing about mixcraft was it was a change you could listen to before you made the change....I was ready to pay for it and try it till allstar talked sense into me...

If I left out any answers let me know...

Ask the "BIG KIDS" here whats up....They can answer anything as I am finding out....(finally) lol....

Hey sweetie - not sure what equipment you are playing your karaoke CDs on - forgive me for not going back and researching more :)...but on my system, I simply hit the MLX _Left or Right button and it removes the vocals from 90% of all my non karaoke CDs :)
Hope that helps a lil' bit :)
Hugs
Tammy Gail

no kiddin' ... what kind of equipment are you using?

Even with the pioneer laser players with true mpx, it wouldn't cancell most of the discs.

Actually I have 2 things that I use...one being the thompsons vocal eliminator that I have had for MANY years...wouldn't trade it for the world - and I've got 2 systems...one is a piece by piece system that I use to perform with, and the other is the VocoPro Club 8000 series - I know, many of you aren't VP fans at all, but I can't brag enough about this system - Only thing I can't seem to eliminate on the 8000 club series is the backup vocals on a CD but can almost always get the Lead vocals out. On occasion I DO however find that it will interfere with the quality that the CD plays, but 7 out of 10 times, it probably does not. I've been lucky to have a guy in town that knows about every secret there is when it comes to running this equipment and he's taught me things that I surprise myself sometimes. My sound girl that works the booth during our Performances at the fairs, Bigger Clubs, and at private paid functions, has easily been taught too. Let me know if this helps
