Ok, there are a few times a year, that we have shows in which we have "giveaways", Christmas being one of them. Here's our problem. We usually look around, and find someone selling an "unused", in a box, karaoke "all in one" player. We'll buy it, and add maybe a set of SGB, or Supercore, or something like that. Every time someone sings, their name goes in a hat, at the end of the night, we pick a name, and that's who gets it. We've had some people who were very happy to win these, and looked forward to using them at home to practice songs, or sing with the grandkids, etc. We know several of our "regulars" who are always excited and are hoping to win when we do this, and it makes us excited for them, also. Here's the dilemma. Last year, we did this, and one of our "regulars" won. He has a VERY monotone personality, so you didn't know if he was excited or not. Fine, we were happy for him, and so was everybody else. Some of the hopefuls "ribbed" him about winning "their" player. Soooo, about a month later, I'm parusing Craigslist, and to my surprise, what do I see? This F@#&ER has it for sale on Craigslist for 40.00. I had even upgraded the mics to pg48's, and better cords. So, it really pi$$ed me off. Planning on doing the "giveaway" again this year, because we STILL have hopefuls. Do you think it would be out of line for me to announce over the mic, before pulling the name, "If you really don't plan on using this, please ask that your name be discarded, and let someone who REALLY wants it have a chance to get it, instead of taking it, and selling it on Craigslist". I know that won't stop the "greedy jerks", but at least if they do take it and sell it, (and I notice it for sale), I can bring it to everyone's attention, and say "if you'd like to buy the player we GAVE away, (insert name) has it for sale on Craigslist. What would YOU do?

While your thoughts and actions are very generous, I'd forget about it. Once you have given something away as a gift, it's no longer yours. It belongs to the person who received it, and it's that person's right to do with it what he/she pleases.

When you give something away it belongs to that person to keep or to do whatever he/she wants. If there are pre-conditions prior, then it wasn’t given willingly. Gifts, in my perspective are given freely with no strings attached.

Yeah, I know, you guys, that once you give a "gift" it's theirs to do whatever they want to do with it. I would just wish that the person would take the gift in the same spirit it was given. It was given in hope that the winner of it would use it to enjoy the KARAOKE experience, NOT get $40.00 to spend on whatever else. And I ALSO know it's none of my business once I've given it, but to see a person be so callous, just pi$$es me off. Guess I'll just have to get over it, because I guess SOME PEOPLE just don't have ETHICS anymore. Maybe that's why nobody has the "giving" spirit anymore, because of the way in which the gift is received. Thanks for the input.

People give gifts all the time that are re-gifted, pawned, or just set in the garage doing nothing at all.
This was not a gift he won it in a raffle-style game.
Heck maybe he will take the $40 and spend it in the bar thus returning the gift in a different way!
You can't tell me that you have EVERY gift that you were ever given. I wish I did as I would have many items that are now rare and collectable but I just used them up and threw them away.
Get over it and if you really want to get a dig in next time he sings in a monotone voice you can say, "I guess the karaoke stuff you won didn't help your singing!"

There’s an easy way to appease your feelings toward the situation. Just think of the possible reasons why it was necessary for him to do what he did. 1. Not into karaoke 2. already have a player, use the money to buy more cds 3. maybe put food on the table 4. It could be perceived as unethical, but he look at it as being that much closer to the crib he needed to buy The spirit of “Thanks Giving”! How did Albert Einstein celebrate Thanksgiving? He was very thinkful.

you win it; you can do what you want with it. Simple as that. The guy felt like $40 was what he won.
What if he won a basket of "cheer" and he didn't drink alcohol? Why shouldn't he sell the basket to someone who would get better use of it?
