I am in SLC for one night only and want to try to get a few songs in tonight. Can't stay out late and drink (only one or the other tonight!) because of a big presentation tomorrow.

Any recommendations?

Two I got from the concierge -"The Tavernacle" and "Piperdown".

If nothing else comes across the wire, I will be at Tavernacle at start time if anyone else is in town.

Enjoy your night, chris. Let us know how it turns out for you. Interesting name for a venue “The Devil’s Daughter”. Just hope the place wasn’t named after the kj or that would give a new meaning to “the kj from hell”.  For real!!

Chris,, I am sorry that I missed your post, I could have met you and taken you to a couple of pretty good places if I had known that you would be in the area. I live in Utah. The Tavernacle is horrid,, the host is bribe oriented,, the better you bribe, the more you sing. I have never heard of the Devils Daughter, so I have nothing to say about it. But I do know of a few good spots. Wednesdays are the hardest night of the week for sure in Salt Lake to find decent shows. I hope your night was a good experience.

Scott

I went to The Devil's Daughter as it was the closest to my hotel.

LOVED the bar. Great lay out and vibe.

I don't want to beat the KJ up but the show could have been better. He started late (BIG pet peeve) and it wasn't for lack of singers. He was using CompuHost with the Next Singer scroller active and had 5 people in the queue at start time.

Otherwise, he had a very nice professional setup, good sound (I think the room setup made the sound better than what it should have been....was running 12" tops with no visible sub, but it all sound pretty darn good).

I wish I would have taken a picture of his song books. They were actual bound books. Think of a phone book (what the hell is that?!?!?) with a very professional cover and then listings by artist and title inside. They were about 1.5 inches thick with nice, easy to read, high contrast printing. No manufacturer info so I had to request that specifically when I put my songs in.

He was having some issues with lyric scrolling throughout the night. I sang "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet (THR) and the lyrics were a good 1/2 measure ahead of the music for the duration. But they were perfectly synced for Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed" (SC). The same thing happened to other singers and some of them had a hard time compensating. I got the impression this was a one-off and not a recurring issue though.

He had a few regulars who were also mic screamers. Combined with the pool players and barfly's literally screaming something unintelligible every 15 seconds, it made for a blah karaoke night for me.

However, I would recommend going back because the bar itself has a great ambience and vibe to it. A couple of pool tables, lots of screens for sports (college basketball was encouraging the screamers), and an actual stage for the singers. I sincerely think it was just an odd night for karaoke while I was there and not the normal way the shows go.
