I do a gig now and again in a local pub where the clientel are, shall I say, rather advanced in years, we have a great night usually.

I like to start things off, well no one else usually gets the urge 'till 10pm, with a few mellow numbers then as everyone starts to join in I do a few more up tempo ones building to some stompers at about 11.45pm.

I can usually do this as it's not hugely busy. But Saturday night....OMG, this guy gets up at 11.30pm, now he's a really nice fella, but he did two, as this is how they like to do their requests, shockers.

3 times a lady and one I've never heard of and he'd never done before. "Woo great cheers come give it up...." etc. Jesus better get a shift on and get the belters in.

Too late. The coats were on and off everyone went. Just me, two stragglers with beer to finish at the bar and the hammered landlord, and the landlady behind the bar.

Oh well, I sang, or tried out, three Rod Stewart songs for a laugh, landlords fav.

Packed up and went at 12.30am, usually don't get away 'till 1am. Not sure if this was a good thing or bad.

I don't know for sure if I followed you correctly, but if you had a very bad singer, one that is going to run people off, maybe you shouldn't have let him sing 2 in a row.

Also, if he was really bad, his mic volume shouldn't have been so high that people would have been turned off.

Sing "2-in-a-row" means that it is bad show from the get go. Eliminate that feature and you will attract more singers. I have never, in my 25 years of singing karaoke, stayed at a show that sang 2-in-a-row. If you have so few singers that you need to do this, something needs fixing. My approach to an extremely successful show has always been to make the experience, for the singer, on the stage, to be better than they have ever had. I am a stickler for tweaking the singer and adjusting the (2) floor minitors for an exceptional singer enviroment. That paired with precision in efficiency in getting singers up down from the stage with only seconds (sometimes zero seconds) between singers. I use filler music but most people don't even know I use it because it is on for such a brief moment between singers.

I also ask singers to change their songs if things tend to drag (ballad hell) and sometimes offer a free drink to any one that changes from slow to fast songs. If no one wants to budge, I put in a fast dance tune or sing one myself.

It is no fun to have a place clear out early and then go home and wonder why.

Response:-
The guy is not a bad singer.
"Jesus better get a shift on and get the belters in."..... ...what does that mean?......

Sorry. Get a move on and get some high quality up tempo songs in.

The two in a row thing is something I've inherited. I only do this gig as a fill in for a mate who get more lucrative gigs elsewhere and palms this onto me.

I really don't want to upset the current people who come in by changing how they do thing. Hell, I tried -sing a song chosen by me for a £5,- and got completely ignored.

So not sure how refusing to let people sing two in a row will go down. Even though I agree with what you say, and don't let it happen at my own gigs.

The speaker thing is a pain too. From where I stand, behind the speakers due to the layout, all seems well, but when I go to the bar, ooooooo no, it's not good at all.

I think I've highlighted a few problems and the reason why no one else ever comes in. Hmmmmmm.
PS My own gigs go from strength to strength, :D

Update:-
Just thought I'd let you know about Saturday.

A few friends came in and there was ALL the regulars in. Busy? I've never ever had so many requests to juggle in this place, so many I was forced into announcing that the usual two songs at a time was NOT an option due to the long wait. :D

We had a stoming evening that could have gone into the early hours with all the slips left over.

And before anyone jumps in, I didn't even bother with filler music just fired through the request as quick as I could.

We even got in a Boys v Girls which goes a storm in other places but never tried here before. It went down really well, with everyone expressing an opinion who won, booing cheering etc.

This could be the turning point !!!!!!!! :D
