So, kind of a frivolous topic that I'm considering writing about on my website: funny incorrect lyrics in karaoke files.

I've noticed this a lot over the years, but I've failed to actually keep track of them. I know I've seen some hilarious ones, but here are a few that I can remember:

- One of my versions of Pearl Jam's "Daughter" reads the chorus as such: "Don't call me daughter/ not fatal." The actual lyric is "not fit to", of course, which sort of makes sense as a sentence as opposed to the "fatal" lyric. (Funny enough, there's a Pearl Jam b-side from a couple years later titled - you guessed it - "Fatal".)

- In Beck's "Loser", my default file reads "So open the door/ I'm a loser baby." Even though "soy un perdedor" is the actual lyric, and the direct Spanish translation for "I'm a loser".

- The Jamie Foxx chorus to Kanye West's "Slow Jamz" ticks off a bunch of famous r&b singers that would "set the party off right", but the file replaces "some Minnie Riperton" with "so many different tunes", which seems like a bit of a stretch to me, although it technically works in context.

- My biggest head-slapper has got to be a recent one: Nicki Minaj's "Starships". The line is "my name is Onika, you can call me Nicki", which makes sense, considering that Onika is Nicki's birth name. Unfortunately, the version I have reads "my name is a n*gga, you can call me Nicki", which would be borderline racist if it weren't understandably difficult to transcribe Minaj's fairly swift and heavily accented flow... the bigger concern is that this song is primarily a choice of white women, who stumble over having to navigate an unanticipated "n-bomb".

So how about you guys? Have you encountered anything hilarious or head-scratching in the realm of wrong karaoke lyrics?

I forget which brand, but I nearly laughed myself out of the song when I saw the swipes for the bridge in Blondie-Call Me, when instead of

oh, amore, chiamami, chiamami
oh, appelle-moi mon cherie, appelle-moi

I read

Oooh, good morning,chow money
oooh, a pale lama

:D

"Spill the wine" by Eric Burdon & WAR. The lyric is "Spill the wine, dig that girl". SBI think's it's "Spill the wine and take that pearl". And they missed out the second verse entirely...

Well, not to hijack this weighty topic, but I must..

SCs "Boat Drinks" has "nobody cares, they are waiting for golf" instead of "nobody cares they are way too far gone."

SGBs "Gentle On My Mind" has, instead of "My beard a roughening coal pile" the strange vision of "My beard rests on a cold towel."

Had to share this "gem" I just found tonight.

kv -Eva Cassidy arrangement of Honeysuckle Rose....

The lyrics are "flowers droop to the side/when you pass by"

The kv swipe reads:

"flys drop on the side/where you pass by" :D

Mayer Hawthorne : The walk

Correct lyric "Just walk it out"

One of my karaoke staples is Hootie and the Blowfish - Let Her Cry. SC has the lyrics "There's the one I love the most and steps not far behind." The Lyric is actually "Dad's the one I love most but Stipe's not far behind." There are a couple more in the song, and lots of small ones in songs I sing, but this one is a pet peeve.

AND WITH POWER KARAOKE'S NEWEST VERSION OF CDG CREATOR, you can change those words to the correct ones. I wonder if you could be sued by Sound Choice for "fixing" their mistakes. It also has a way to make the lyrics show up a little sooner than normal for those really fast songs where the first line of a new page never gets painted to the screen early enough so that the singer can see it in plenty of time to sing it properly. Great little program. The only problem is that all of the screens with logos or other pictures get deleted in the process. ;c(

How could I forget the worst lyric howler of all?
Ohio Players : Fire

Lyric: "I'm gonna choke from the smoke, got me tight'nin' up my stroke, can you feel it girl?"
Sunfly, SBI and Abraxa think it's "I'm from the joke / from the smoke / let me tighten up your smoke / Can you feel it girl"

This one is my pet peeve and has caught me out a couple of times. (Sunfly is the worst because in addition to the dodgy lyrics the text is very small, and to add insult to injury the music crudely fades prematurely almost immediately after said lyric howler). To the point that I try not to use SBI/AX particular version, which is annoying as i like the sweep and the backing track. I have yet to find another karaoke version with as good a backing track and correct lyrics, although I haven't yet tried Sound Choice's.

Have you contacted SBI about the incorrect lyric? If you do, they can correct it (at least their SBI version), and they will give you a new download of that song for free (if you already purchased it before). They did that for me once (on a song which I reported an incorrect lyric).

I've gotten a few free tracks from karaokeversion.com when I pointed out lyrical errors in some songs that I bought. Same thing from i-tunes. There was a Springsteen song that was missing an entire line of the song. Most of these karaoke instrumental sellers will work with their customers and not try to harrass them, if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the good info on SBI, Cueball - impressive! This is what the karaoke companies should have been doing all along. I don't know why they wouldn't just get a lyric sheet from the artist when they purchased the rights to the song anyway...

"Feenin' by Jodeci.

They titled it "Feeling" and everywhere it is supposed to say "feenin" the lyric says "feeling."

My customers always get a big laugh from that one.

Slight hijack (but thread related nonetheless) worth considering. Sorry, Andrew. Not exactly manu karaoke printed lyrics, but just funny ‘misheard lyrics’

Don’t go around tonight, it’s bound to take your life
There’s a bathroom on the right
(there’s a bad moon on the rise)

Steve Miller Band – The Joker
Some people call me Maurice...
of a Platypus of love
(Cause' I speak of the propitious of love)

Eagles – Hotel California
On the dark desert highway. Cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of chiquitas
(warm smell of colitas)

Elton John – Tiny Dancer
I said softly, slowly, hold me closer
Tiny dancer
(Tony Danza)

Pretenders – Brass In Pocket
I got grass in pocket
(I got brass in pocket)

Go Go’s – Our lips are sealed
In the jealous games people play
I killed a seal
(our lips are sealed)

J. Geils Band – Centerfold
My blood runs cold
My anus is a center hold
(my memory has just been sold)

And the ever classic Jimi Hendrix – Purple Haze
Actin' funny, but I don't know why

Hmmm. I always thought it was "pompitous of Love".

And, in your example, don't you have the "Tiny dancer" and "Tony Danza" in the wrong spots?

One of my favorites is from an All Hits disc, I believe. The song is "Livin' Lovin' Maid" by Led Zeppelin.

The correct verse is "With a purple umbrella and a 50 cent hat".

All Hits says "With a purple operator and fifty percent hair".
