Post subject:  Recording on a PC

I am going to try and set my PC up so it can record me singing. The setup I have goes like this cdg player / mixer (karaoke setup)

1Do I go from the mixer to the PC in? (The mixer has a spot that you plug in to record /mackie dfx 12)

2.What software should I use?

Thanks

Yes, you go from the mixer to the line in on your sound card.

I use audacity since it's pretty full featured and FREE. Others use Cool Edit Pro and the equivilent Adobe product.

you want to plug your PC's line in NOT MIC IN, to the monitor port of the mixer, or if you are using a standard home amplifier tape 2 monitor. Make sure your sound card has a line in and not just MIC IN otherwise you will only get mono. If you don't have a line in then you'll need to get a better sound board. You can pick up an older Soundblaster Live Value pretty cheap if you need a recomendation on a board.

As far as recording you can pretty much use any wave recorder that dones 44khz, but if you want to edit the wave files you'll need something like the above mentioned...

or you can use a Soundblaster MP3 USB device ($45 at outpost DOT com) .. hooks the cdg player up as a regular RCA connection. works sweet that way!

I'm with Karaokemeister regarding the software. I use the latest version of Audacity and find it so incredibly easy to use. The added bonus is the price... it's free!!

I Bought the Soundblaster MP3 as Kightshow suggest's and Ive had a great time with it..the rca imputs make it easy to copy any audio to MP3 file...
hook it up hit record and you have ol Grandma's voice from old Cassette tapes or audio from VCR tapes and you can send the files to family......

what a world we live in today....a long way from waiting 3 months to get the 10 minuets of 8mm film developed... and no sound when you played it back.

think Ill try out Audasity thanks for the info Guy's.

Oh, I LOVE USB stuff! LOL!

I've got a terrific 4 port usb non-powered hub from tigersurplus . com (dunno if they still have it there, but it's a great place to get stuff for your PC) and I have my usb external hard drive hooked up, another I can do for quick copying and taking with me, the usb Soundblaster MP3, and a pinaccle usb device for my laser conversion!

Post subject:  soundblaster vs getting a new audio card

i do my karaoke from my laptop so the soundblaster mp3 looks like the cheapest way to go, you said you hook it up to your cdg player to record, could it just record directly from the mixer or would i be better off purchasing a sound card with a line in?

the usb device IS your "soundcard"... you won't need anything extra. If you want to go from your mixer, hook your player up to the mixer, and the mixer OUT to the usb device!
