I didn't want to hijack the other thread.

I have never liked 3 ring binders. In the 20+ years of going to karaoke, I have never been to a show that used 3 ring binders where the binders were anything but beat up, clunky, sticky, pages missing, rings catch pages....the list goes on. In a word, 3-ring binders suck IMO (my apologies to everyone that uses them).

I have always used spiral binding (pics). I started laminating the front and back covers after seeing Big Mike's books in Oregon. I now also laminate the first 3 additional pages that have other permanent info about the show. I am currently looking at some polyester papers that are water resistant/proof. Hose the entire book down as needed.

First impressions mean everything. The books are one of the first things people encounter. A great looking book means a lot to me as a singer and I have received a lot of compliments on mine.

I reprint books after I have hit a self-determined quantity of new updates to the library. I will also reprint if they get trashed regardless of how old they are. To offset costs, I am now working with local establishments to place ads in the books on permanent laminated pages.


Pros -

Very professional looking
Smaller Books means less weight/space used
Pages never get caught, fall out, replaced in the wrong order
I can toss a book to someone without worrying about it flying apart

Cons -

Can't be easily updated
Pages can still be torn out, stained
Overall more expensive to print/update

The book in the pics was printed in December 2012 and has been in weekly use. The book pictured is By Artist, Two Columns, 5 Laminated pages, and contains info on ~59,000 tracks

Chris,
Do you get your spirals done at a chain or online that other KJ's may be able to look into? I have been wanting to try them with 1 system and see how well they hold up.

Kinko's/FedEx Center. I can't provide a true cost as I get a discount. I have another venue coming online in a couple of weeks which will require new books. I will get a standard pricing quote with full details posted when I print them.

I do the printing for my books on a hp4250 with duplexing. A local independent copy center charges me 3.50 per book for the spiral binding. I use a transparency sheet on the front and back to protect the book.

I've been doing it this way all along. I added the online version over a year ago for updates.

I also use spiral binding with heavy card-stock, laminated covers. I use 25# paper because it is liquid and tear resistant. I hardly ever lose pages from these books. They last and last, but I try to replace them every 6th months or so just to get the updates into print.

Plain paper with a clear front and vinyl back only costs about $17 for 100 double-sided pages. But those books wear out very quickly.

The ones I use now cost about twice that, but I keep an eye out for the 2 for 1 sale that my local print-shop runs a couple of times a year.

Your Books look nice Chris.

However, every show i've ever seen them used at had either;

Pages missing or torn 99% of the time

Water stains from drinks

Written on with ink, pencil, or just defaced.

Food stains and grease marks

...and usually not updated :(

This is why i chose locking-ring binders with sheet protectors nearly 15 years ago.

Inexpensive

Easy to replace pages and sheet protectors if stained or defaced

Easy to update books

Hard to rip out pages

Books don't bend

Imho...spiral bound books are lucky to last 2 months before looking old, cracked, bent, or stained.

Polyester pages sound like a great idea, but still updates are a bi#@h if you have to take books apart to update them.

This is what I've done in the past as well John. Cost is pretty low, sheet protectors last forever,,, or at least 99% of the time. I just laminate my business logo on the front along with 'Artist" or "Title". Plus I bought a laser jet printer that prints on both sides. 1 pc of paper is half the cost of 2 plus the books are not so thick and easier to put one pc in a protector than two. And I pick those 3 ring binders up at Wally world for about 3 bucks.

Chris, instead of using spiral binding, I recommend comb binding. The comb binds can be easily opened. I bought a Fellows Comb Binder from Staples a few years back for like $250. I absolutely love it.

i have always used 3 ring binders

i've had the problem with rings bending and pages falling out....

here's the trick to fix that problem if you want to use them:

spend the money get heavy duty binders.
myself i use a nice big print and use 3 inch binders for my older poor sighted singers,
oh yeah and the drunks that can't follow a shaded line.

also don't print with an inkjet printer, use a laser printer cause toner doesn't run
when it gets wet.

use a soldering iron and silver solder to solder the rings together after you've loaded all your pages.

that's the trick, no more missing pages, no smeared ink.

if you've tried using superglue to hold them then i suggest you buy new binders
cause the heat from the soldering iron produces a nice toxic smoke in conjunction
with the super glue...(makes the eyes water!)

also the rings come apart easy with the soldering iron, so you can update books with out a problem....

i've never had a customer purposely try to pull the rings apart, and they withstand falls to the floor.

and if you don't solder, it's a good time to learn. radio shack has all you need.

I will check into how economical it is to do myself. It would require buying a new printer (which I do happen to be in the market for).
