I am considering the purchase of a karaoke machine for my family for some fun and entertainment, and would like to know of any sites that might make recommandations or provide reviews of home karaoke machines and what to look for when considering the purchase of one. Any suggestions from anyone here?

I have a number of players and for home use I make the same recommendation as for what I use in my show.

I use an RSQ 333 when I host which is the same as the JVC. It's a triple tray changer. Cost wasn't that bad given the quality of the unit. Be sure to check around for pricing though.

Even if you don't have to que up singers it's nice to be able to put in a disc and leave it because you only have a couple people singing and you want to sing 3-4 songs off that disc. You can go a little cheaper and go with the single tray version of the same player which I've heard good things about.

As for the other players, I have a Memorex boom box style player for 'testing' occasionally if a disc doesn't play for some reason or if a friend want's to 'play around'.

I also have a Ritech 3700 and 3900 DVD player. These are billed as DVD+Karaoke but don't bother. The decoding of the CDG is slow and the swipe isn't even. As a DVD player they're ok (both are progressive scan) but woefully poor for karaoke use. I have them around 'just in case' I have a problem but I'd rather use my $40 Memorex boom box CD+G player than the Ritech DVD Players.

Only thing is they may not give an honest assessment. They are trying to sell a product - period! Of course they will tell you their product is the best, but they don't have to use it, you do.

Just ask, & we'll give you honest assessments - may have to be in PM's, but at least you will get real info.

Ouchhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! That hurts!!! I don't think that was a fair comment Lonman, as much as I respect you. I think you took out the big guns this time.

I think I phrased it wrong. I didn't mean non-honest, I did mean an un-BIASED opinion. Most retailers are going to push what they carry, if they don't carry it, they won't push someone to where they can get it - obviously from the lack of being able to link to "non-sponsors" sites. They will say that their stuff is the best - because that's what they sell, and it might just very well be the BEST of the stuff they may carry - whatever that may be.
For un-biased opinions, that is where these kinds of forums come in handy (or at least should) by giving a consumer ideas from first hand users - bad or not, whether a product they may be looking at is something that they really want or need.

Just go to your local big box retailer and get an inexpensive all in one Karoake machine, take it home and plug it into your home stereo. Use your VCR to connect the video thru instead of having to pay for an RF Modulator($30). You probably wont be using the machine that frequently so you dont need to buy a $250 RSQ or JVC unit for home use. Whole thing shouldnt cost more than $100. Save alot of time and money.

I use a "Performer's choice" PCK-2000 for home use. It does everything I want and has AV output for connection to the TV. The remote control output is a little weak, meaning I have to make sure it's pointed at the main box. Apart from that, it's great. BTW, the mic that came with it appears to be a rebadged SM-58, which was a real plus. I do all my subs with that mic and wouldn't even consider paying out for a more expensive mic.

This has been hashed before, and Lonman's comments that home stereo isn't designed for live sound, etc in that other thread (use the search feature) still apply. IIRC the thread was aimed at Allstar but I could be wrong. If I get a chance to search and find the thread I'll see if I can point you to it.

I recommend using the component players if you insist on hooking it up to your home stereo since it looks like it belongs with your DVD/VCR/Amplifier/etc. If you want to do it REAL cheap go to Radio Shack and pick up a Memorex CD+G Boom box for $40. Will it work? Sure. Will it look like a big blue and silver wart on your entertainment center? YEP.

Check out the RSQ-505 DVD/CDG player for your home system. It's relatively inexpensive and often bundled with a set of discs.
