Post subject:  Deleting duplicates
Hi everyone,i have recently transfered all my discs to hd.So i now have alot of dupes.
I am using kj file manager to organise everything.
If for instance i delete disc id's for the Sunfly range and just label them SF,i could then see
all my dupes and delete the ones i dont need.
Have i got all this correct or is there a better way.

Why delete anything off your hard drive? If singers come up and ask for a different version, it's there. Delete the dups from your book.

I agree with Lonman. Not only that, but if you have a corrupted file for one of your song tracks, or just a bad file in general (garbled word-swipes), you can always pull up one of your dupes in a pinch.

Steve that is EXACTLY what I did with KJ File Mgr..........HOWEVER I moved the dupes to a "Dupes' folder 1", and I kept repeating the dupe search in each "Dupes" folder to were I had Dupes 1, Dupes 2, Dupes 3, etc., until I only had short ID's in every folder. It really did work quite well doing it this way as long as you keep a copy of ALL of rips with their full ID's. Latshaw's Song list generator uses this technique for creating your song books.

Until recently, I only removed dupes from my books leaving everything on the drive. But I also have slowly started doing something similar to mrmarog.

One reason I want to remove dupes from my drive is to reduce backup/restore time. Even with today's fast drives, it takes several hours to backup/restore everything. I am closing in on 70,000 tracks now.

I also want to start optimizing my karaoke disc usage more effectively. With as many duplicate songs as I have, I can probably run more rigs than I think I can without having top purchase more discs. Particularly for discs that have songs that are likely to be requested less frequently.

I have been chatting with a co-worker about an algorithm that will help optimize this and tell me what discs I can pull out for additional rigs.

Also bear in mind that some manufacturers put out more than one version of the same song by the same artist, and they can differ.

A good example of that would be Garth Brook's "Friends in Low Places. I know that Sound Choice has both the regular Jukebox/Radio Version and the Live Version (which has a 3rd stanza and what seems like a never ending chorus).
