At my monthly gig at my local pub, I was told by the owner that there was a 20th birthday party on that night. Ok. I'll not do my usual stuff, just run it as a karaoke evening, full stop. All went well as the young people got into the evening. One thing that I usually do and thought it would be ok to do is Boys V Girls thing, a bit of a sing off. Girls went first and danced and sang their way through a One Direction hit. Brilliant !!!! Boys? Not interested! In fact none of them got up to sing at all....all night!!!!!! Just the girls, who damn well know how to party!!!!! It was a real eye opener. Back in my day, it was the other way round. Girls were sort of shy and quiet. Oh lordy! Not anymore!!!!
Anyone else noticing this?

8) I haven't noticed any difference, did a Luau Saturday with the pig in the ground the whole nine yards. The guys were still trying to get up and hula dance with the professionals and looked outclassed, everyone was feeling good, no problem. When it came time to do the karaoke the guys sang Blue Hawaii, and Tiny Bubbles, mixed crowd, typical Luau party. Nice money to, less than two months till retirement.

I don't think it's a "guy" or "girl" thing. I think it has more to do with who is in a specific party. Could be the guys were more true sports bar type guys and didn't have the one guy to help get them over the hump. If I had a party that leaned one way and not the other, I would talk to a few on the singing side about duets. You get one girl that gets one guy up and it could be like dominoes.

You said it was a 20th birthday. I'll bet if it were a 21st birthday it would have been a completely different scenario because alcohol would have been a bigger part of the equation. This is WHY karaoke is in bars. Young guys don't have the kahunas to sing by themselves without some liquid encouragement.

I think the legal drinking age in the UK is 18 (i could be wrong) and if it is then alcohol is not the problem.

Oh hell, in my decades of doing this both in public venues and at private events it's ALWAYS been this way.

Guys are WAY more worried about looking bad- not just in front of their friends, but in front of the ladies.
The girls are MUCH looser.

In fact, when I do private events, I always look for the most outgoing female to start the ball rolling. If she's attached, I wander over to the guy and tell him his lady thinks maybe he's a bit of a chicken ( paraphrased in a much more pleasant manner, of course) and would love to hear him give it a try. Once the first guy gets up, all is good.

Correct on the drinking age...18, so no problem there!!!! The girls in question did get one lad up, twice, who was a fair singer, so you'd have thought he'd not have scared off the other lads, yet still no response from the lads. It's a strange world we're living in.
