Just curious as to how many use floor monitor(s) ? In my area myself and only one other host use them. We happen to use two (and so does the other show). I often hear when new people come in of how much better they like our set up compared to so and so's down the street, I hear "we can actually hear ourselves"

More work yes, but I feel worth it. Not to say you can't be creative with speaker placement etc. to achieve something similar to create a good show with only your mains.
What say you?

I only have one venue that will easily support using a floor monitor. I just bought one at the request of the singers. I am anxious to get it up and running. At all the other venues, the floor monitor would be in a walkway or otherwise obstruct traffic.

I use a EV ZXA1 as a vocal monitor. Not only does it help the singer hear themselves, but I have it positioned so I can hear it as well. I have the monitor routed so that I have the option of having an independent mix, but more often than not, I just have the main mix in the monitor so I know what the FOH sounds like.

I use the Bose L1 System with the T1 Tonematch mixer. Due to the internal EQ and the radial disbursement of sound I can have the speakers a couple of feet behind the singer. Thereby eliminating the need for a floor monitor in front of the singer.

But on my previous P.A. systems I always used a powered monitor run off of the aux of my mixer for the singers. It needn't be a large monitor. Depending on the placement, a powered 10" will do.

I have always used a floor monitor (or 2). Even in a small venue I have been able find a place to put one. I get compliments from people all the time about how good it sounds on the stage. It is a must for places that have serious singers. As Topher has pointed it can greatly aid the host as well

Interesting BT. I have done this before, balanced out the system with my DriveRack to avoid feedback etc. and the majority of singers did not like this set up. I suppose because it was different that what they were used to. I thought it was a neat set up, but took it down and ran it traditional with monitors. Do you ever get any complaints?

My singer love them. I use Kustem boxes with a 10" I upgraded. I do have to roll off the low end so not to get too muddy a sound.

Will always use a floor monitor (or at the very least a small mic stand mount monitor). I have two on my stage. I am currently in the process of changing out the drivers & re-wiring to be bi-amp capable.

I've been using this... It's perfect. Very portable, good sound and fits on a mic stand.

no monitors here, Bose L1 ModII. no feedback unless i have to crank the gain to a ridiculous amount for a whisperer.
if you have a stage some kind of monitoring method is important. i would use a powered 12" something if i needed.

I've been wanting to buy a breadbox of some sort. I had a floor monitor down and this really drunk guy that wasn't even a singer staggered into the bar and headed straight for the stage area. Before his friends could grab him he had crashed into my tv stand and sent my floor monitor rolling across the floor. Add to that some drunks wanting to get too close to it with drinks and I just didn't want to risk a speaker that way any more. But it is a pain not to have one so I'm looking at the little ones.

Hi simpmech. I've never had any complaints from singers. Although some have mentioned that they were a little skeptical about not having a monitor in front of them. They immediately commented that they were pleasantly surprised as to how well they could hear everything, and that the sound was crystal clear.

No TV/Lyrics Floor Stands every for me. I am quite convincing when it comes to getting a venue to allow me to permanently mount a flat screen somewhere for the lyrics.

Here you can see a small monitor I mounted on a swivel behind me for the audience members sitting closer to the "stage area".

And here, you can see the lyrics screen I mounted from the ceiling about mid-bar.

This venue also has a large 42" TV to the singers left when they are on stage. They can walk around and always see lyrics.

Every venue I have ever had I have been able to convince to let me doe something similar. It is a small investment on my part to purchase a $150 flat panel + cabling (or wireless HDMI). Saves me setup time, avoids a stage monitor (that WILL get knocked over at some point) and frees the singers up to move around the audience. I don't like being tied to a specific spot in a room when I sing so I don't do it to my singers.

Post subject:  Re: Floor Monitors???

I've worked at places where I didn't have to bring a screen at all but I also have some mobile one-offs where I do need to have something. So floor monitor vs breadbox on a stand vs no monitor and speaker placement are still an issue.

My Bose are postioned off to the side of the typical singing postion, to fill the room with sound. Multiple video monitors and wirelesss mics allow the singers to move about the room and hear what everyone else hears. They love the sound and the freedom.

Here is one of our set up's (this venue is outdoors & has more room to set up, so we were able to use subs and three ways etc.) with our floor monitors

Yup, have always used a floor monitor (qsc 10 or rcf 10). I know it makes a difference and the regs and newbies are appreciative. I also hook it up thru the aux to adjust the music and mic output separately.

For me, it always depends on the room and how I set up. Out of my 5 weekly shows, I only use floor monitors on 2 of them.

Post subject:  Re: Floor Monitors???

When I started running Karaoke shows I didn't use a floor monitor for the singers for a few years simply because I was convinced that is absolutely NOT necessary at all. After getting request after request I finally gave in for the only reason of it being requested.

So I started to use the speaker monitor at every show for a few weeks when I had a private party at a very "tough" location, very limited space, etc. So that night I decided to leave the floor monitor in the truck just for this one night. I felt lost... I was never convinced that a monitor for a singer is justified but boy to my surprise I really missed it that night... a lot! Ever since the monitor goes everywhere I set up, one way or another.

Like I said earlier, there is always somewhere that you can put a monitor, because it just that important to have one.
