I am quitting after over 19 years in just 8 more days. The reasons are health and age issues, I have just turned 68 years old and I simply don't want to deal with trying to run a business 6 days a week, 10 months a year. I have a comfortable retirement, and no debts, and my wife wants to take a break. Not to mention the host that covers for me 2 months a year also wants to pack it in. I want to enjoy what is left of my life since I have been working at something ever since I was a young boy. It is time to let others try there hand at hosting and see how they like it. I'm taking an extended vacation after this is all done and will be visiting friends and family some of which we haven't seen in years. I hope to be on vacation for over a year if everything works out like I planned it. |

Health - If I can't lift/carry/move the equipment, or worse, I just can't make it to a show, then I am done. Being 48 in December, I (hopefully) have a few years left. Also, Social Security will likely not exist for my generation. The general population of folks that are currently 55 and younger will be working longer (into their 70's) unless they have managed to save a lot of money for retirement. -Chris |

Quote: Smoking ban ....the grass is always greener. When I quit, it will be because of my ridiculously smokey bar. My doctor says I basically smoke a pack a week just from my two nights at my venue, even though I'm a non-smoker. |

If I quit this biz, it's for one of 2 reasons. I either finally succeeded in my software endeavor or it's because my (estranged) wife made me. She hates that I'm at the bar several nights a week (working), she likes to suspect (for no reason) that when a female talks to me for longer than 5 or 10 seconds that we are hooking up, and she says she's embarrassed to tell people what I do. She's actually already filed for divorce and if reconciliation is in our future, I already know I'll have to quit. |

because there is no longer an audience that prefers the way I run a show. |

singsong wrote: Smoking ban Dumb reason if it's banned everywhere in your area, the bars do & will snap back. It took less than a year here for patrons to accept it. Now those singers don't come to our show anymore BECAUSE we still have smoking (tribal). |

Jealousy was definitely an issue during my earlier hosting years, but now that I’m a lot older wife doesn’t even bat an eye when I flirt with the ladies. She knows there’s not much I can do at my old age (Mr. Two-pump chump!) And that would be the reason when I quit, not health issues, ain’t got no aches & pains, yet, but old age. I host twice a week, Fri & Sat at a nice family restaurant/club. Stationary, permanent installation, no set-up or tear-down. Feels like partying every weekend. Life is good! |

Lung cancer from all the smoke, would make me quit. ( I PRAY for a smoking ban to come along!!!) In NY the bars came back after two months of the smoking ban being voted in. I would quit if I couldn't move the equipment anymore. I am only 46 so I am sure I have a few good years left. Death might make me quit. |

Yes to point one--the smoking is getting to me but people shouldn't worry about point two. I'm a 60 year old, short female with no fixed set up. I carry in and out for each show and I came into this not having the best back after years at my other job. But the technology keeps making things lighter. |

I was already forced into early retirment as a karaoke host because of a lack of solid business and networking skills. As for karaoke, I will stop doing it when they pry the microphone from my cold, dead fingers.. -James |

A friend of mine gave me his old speakers, after he blew them up. I replaced the cones with new originals. They are Behringer 215s. They are a bit heavy, BUT, since I have had my regular show, my back is actually doing better. |

I would say "I'll quit when I can't sing anymore," but since I can't sing to begin with... um... hmm. I guess I won't be quitting. |

I don't want to quit because I really like hosting but by back is not what it used to be. I've already made some compromises to cut down on the weight but when the day comes that I can't lift anymore, it's time to give it up. For now, I will keep going until I can't do this anymore. ** This got me thinking about speakers. They're probably the heaviest things we have to lift. And I'm sure that most of us want outstanding sound. Well that usually comes with heavy speakers that are expensive. The issue is either the money or the weight or both. I'm sure most of us would love those awesome sounding speakers but they're just too heavy. I know in my case, I was using Yamaha's that were 65lbs a piece which at one time was nothing to me. I loved that great Yamaha sound and so did my customers. But, as I got older and started having back/shoulder problems, I now use a pair of Peavey PR15's. They're half the weight of the Yamaha's and with a little eq, they sound pretty good. Good bass and clean highs. I've gotten compliments from people about my sound so I guess people like them. It's just too bad that sometimes we have to settle but I guess that's part of getting older. |

only being 36 i have a long way, but i think it will be when i am no longer having fun with it. for the speakers, that is one reason i went with the Bose, lighter than anything else. |
