Do not post links! (out of respect for the forum rules and the KS guide)

I am trying to get a handle on how many printed karaoke guides are left in production. I am specifically looking for a count of those that are fully or mostly dedicated to karaoke.

I am NOT counting online forums or web sites, only those in print.

Who has a printed karaoke guide for their geography?

Our local Creative Loafing has a section of metro area karaoke bars, but you have to pay to be in it, so only a fraction are actually represented.

My bar is about a mile away from a strip of 10-12 hotels, and a good number of the local businesses advertise on a back and front laminated ad that's in all of those hotel rooms, including a good number of the karaoke shows in the immediate area.

There's definitely not a comprehensive list of karaoke shows for my area though, as there are literally hundreds of shows in our two metro counties.

I don't think you'd particularly want to be on a comprehensive local karaoke show list. You might as well send a personal letter to SC/CB asking them to investigate your venue  I know for a fact that when SC did their sweep of the Tampa Bay area, they visited all of the karaoke shows with prominant websites and local advertising. DOH!

not out here. all entertainment including bands, pool, darts, and poker get lumped into one or two monthly rags but that is about it anymore.

Nothing I am aware of in NY City either. Maybe they have regular publication (with Karaoke listings) Upstate NY.

I think that many people in the Karaoke business these days try to rely on word of mouth to advertise their show to other venues and singers. Many KJs are trying to avoid being caught up in the law suit nets so they just keep everything on the down low. It's just easier. Why give aid to the enemy by telling them where you are? There are plenty of karaoke shows out there for people who want to find them.

Well, that may be true now, but even 10 years ago (well before these lawsuits came about), I was never aware of any NY Vity publication that advertised regular Karaoke shows in the City. Yes, there have always been (and still are) the occasional ad in a local Free Press paper (such as The Chronical), which mentions a local Karaoke show, but nothing like what I believe Chris is referring to.

This is true. Word of Mouth is how I have always been aware of local Karaoke shows in my area.

We have a local "entertainment" weekly paper called WhatzUp that lumps karaoke in with DJs. The information is frequently outdated and never complete. On the plus side the paper is free and a listing in the calendar is free.

In my area we have the "Ticket", which is in the newspaper, and is a very comprehensive listing of all entertainment in the area, but the "Ticket" staff does not think of karaoke as entertainment so not a word is mentioned.

We have a local print publication that covers "entertainment" with karaoke being the primary focus. Any KJ can list their shows in the main listing for free, but 1/8 page and larger ads cost money. The magazine has been shrinking over the past 7 years and I believe it is just a matter of time before it goes away completely.

Internet advertising on karaoke listing sites, social media and the aforementioned word of mouth are the ways people are finding out about shows now based on the conversation I have with singers.

I just started the last print ad campaign that I intend to run. We have a 3 month long contest and I took out a 1/4 page ad for it. After this, I am relying solely on social media and online listings.

None here. Only by word of mouth & thru ‘Yelp’. Our venue is a family restaurant; patrons posts comments about their dinner & then mention karaoke. Working out very well I might add.

Chris, I think mobile apps are slowly replacing the print guides, which makes sense, they can be updated easily, and folks always have their phone with them. I have one myself for the Myrtle Beach area that features all my DJ Trivia and DJ Bingo shows. I don't see any print guides making it in the future, especially something that is niche focused on a small part of the entertainment options, at least where I am. Every tourist has a least one cell phone and in the case of families, multiple phones.

In Portland we have a local paper called "Positively Entertainment" that over the years(in publication since 1977), became the defacto Karaoke mag here. Within the last 2-3 years, Karaoke stories and ads have essentialy dried up to where the mag is 90% local live bands(mostly older "classic rock").

In reference to the mag that Chris refers to, up until a year ago it had an active presence in Portland and Oregon with regular monthly stories and a few paid ads. That has essentially dried up and disappeared, so now it is a Washington-centric publication.

Even Karaoke Scene is primarily LA (and surrounding areas), CA based if i'm not mistaken. Which was cool when they did an article on a local Tacoma, WA based KJ a few years back

Karaoke Scene is home based in Cypress, CA, Orange County (lived there for 19yrs). Besides OC they also cover karaoke clubs & bars scenes listing the surrounding counties like LA, Inland Empire, San Bernardino, Ventura & down south San Diego. Check out their ks digital mag 5 page venue listings starting at page 11. Probably the only karaoke mag that supports the karaoke community wholeheartedly & with total commitment! Kudos! :D

We have a publication for Mpls.--St Paul that lists about 4 or 5 karaoke shows for every night of the week--but that is only about 35 gigs out of the 200 that are actually going on.
