I'm actually pretty good at that stuff -- I sing a few hundred songs and know the lyrics to all. But it is easy to lose your frame of reference, or just get butterflies. So I do better when I have the lyrics, even though I almost never look at them.

People notice, and they often remark on how I don't look at the screen.

I wish I could remember the words. I've been singing the same (more or less) song for years and I still can't all the time. It just take a little to throw me off. :( I wish I could spell. :mrgreen:

Springsteen admits it openly. Even after singing a song for 25 years, you can just have a "brain fart". More of a safety net than anything.

James Hatfield of Metallica uses one too. Heard him talk about it on The Nerdist podcast, but he calls it a "Word Wedge". Cooler than "teleprompter" I guess. :lol:

Hi, I'm Joe, and I'm a monitor addict....

Even though I may know a song by heart, and don't really read it- or even look at it, I'm much more comfortable knowing it's there. I will rarely sing without one.

Emotional / security crutch?
