I didn't see much on Re:Sound in Canada so just wanted to share some insight on the company.

Re:Sound is the Canadian not-for-profit music licensing company dedicated to obtaining fair compensation for artists and record companies for their performance rights.

I contacted them the other day to get more insight and apparently it's another $140.00 CAD per year out of my hard earned dollars.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no performance right for karaoke, which is why if a venue pays SOCAN it can include karaoke*altho why its an upgrade on the form is unclear to me*

so I don't see why this group would be necessary unless you wanted to do like a live video stream/webcast of the performances.

On their site it says for karaoke "This license covers the use of recorded music for the purpose of karaoke at karaoke bars and similar establishments"

Quote taken from http://www.resound.ca/tariffs Tariff 5C karaoke. I myself thought SOCAN covers this with the owners of the establishments.

I'm gonna call re:sound again in the morning to get a more clear view on this.

It looks like to me it the venue that pays not the Karaoke host. Just like in the USA.

i still say its a scam/unecessarily. If this re:sound company is claiming to represent the SOUND RECORDINGS, as stated in the PDF then they are unnecessary for karaoke because the copyrights to the SOUND RECORDINGS either belong to the karaoke producer that made the music, such as ZOOM or SBI in the UK or in the case of SOUNDCHOICE to Stinray music.

I seriously doubt that this group represents ANY of the karaoke producers.

That is for performance, not for media shifting. I've contacted Re:Sound, AVLA, and CMRRA. and none can give permission for media shifting due to the sync rights.

Forgive me if this is wrong but isn't "media shifting" converting original format to alternate formats.

I gave up even trying to change formats for the purpose of Technology. With SoundChoice (Pep Rocks offering the Help program at $200.00 per month it's just as easy to "purchase the Gem series with MP3+G format already.

Media shifting is taking a product and copying it from it's original media (container) to another media (container), and thereby creating a copy.

With regular CD's the copy usually changes format from Redbook audio to any number of formats with MP3 being one of the most common.

With CD+G's, the audio usually goes under the same change, but the graphic portion of the file is virtually unchanged.

The GEM series is intended for a specific, limited media shift. The fact that the file format is already MP3+G means that there is no format shift.
