Went to a show this past weekend to troubleshoot a sound problem for a guy.

Sound was a muddy mix of no mids, tinny highs, and a mono bass thud with no body to it.

Had trouble believing it was possible the mix could be so screwed up in all ranges at the same time but he managed it.

1) 20 year old guitar cords being used as speaker cables. One of tips at the speaker end was broken and just flopping in the sleeve.

2) XLR to 1/4 adapters on the back of the mixer were loose and frayed.

3) Old school happy facer mixer equalizer settings . . . . +4 3 2 1 1 1 2 3 4

4) Bonus mix - Happy face number 2 in the Karma Equalizer +6 5 4 3 3 3 4 5 6

My MacGyver fixes for the evening -

Looped broken tip speaker(guitar) cable over top of the speaker to keep tension on it so broken tip maintained connection.

Carefully arranged speaker(guitar) cables at back of mixer to maintain connection.

Flatlined to zero the Karma equalizer and hid it from his view

Set a baseline equalization on the mixer based on sound instead of happy face.

He was happy the result and plans to get real speaker cables this week and fix or replace the XLR-1/4 adapters.

I see the smile or V shape eq more often than not and they wonder why no vocals are cutting through. DUH! ALL vocals are in that low section of the eq.
