When smoking used to be allowed in bars did you put a table with an ashtray close to the stage or did singers just hold their cigarettes? Did the smokers have enough time during instrumentals to have a puff and quickly exhale or did they exhale while singing the next verse? |

To KS members: Just in case you haven't noticed sinsong has NEVER made a post that hasn't mentioned smoking. 22 of his 50 posts have "smoking" in it and 20 have the word "smoke". 4 "cigs", 5 "cigarettes" |

Big tobacco advertising is alive and well . . . just a bit more subversive. Watch most Blue Bloods episodes and you will find at least a minute of loving closeups of cigs burning in an ashtray. Tons of scenes in all the movies and tv shows that are outright cig worship. Strangely enough, you never see a scene where the hero wakes up hacking his lungs out, or mom gets the kids to school late because she was out of smokes and stopped first at the local stop and rob to get her fix. |

When I smoked... I'd bring the cig with me and sometimes I even smoked a puff while singing and would exhale the smoke with the words... IF there wasn't an ashtray nearby, I'd have had no problem sitting my burning butt on the edge of your speaker, table, mixer, tv stand, the closest pool table, or even ask you (the host) to hold it (but don't sneak a drag) for me until I got going. I'm delighted that no one can smoke indoors at a public show anymore in a restaurant/bar in Colorado. |

Back in the days when smoking was allowed in bars, tables with ashtrays were usually set up throughout, including near the stage. Singers often had to manage their cigarettes between verses or during instrumentals, which wasn’t always smooth. Nowadays, with vaping becoming more popular, it’s much easier. I recently switched to vapes, especially the Crave Max 2500, and it's been great. It has a pleasant smell and doesn’t bother people as much. If you're looking for an alternative, it's definitely a great choice. |

Back before my karaoke hosting days, when smoking was just beginning to get recognized as an activity that could be banned in public places, I was a die-hard smoker, and would routinely turn down mobile DJ gigs in "no smoking" venues. Later, when all public venues banned smoking, I would have to pop outside for a puff or two every three or four songs... Luckily, I was able to quit the evil habit cold turkey nearly 20 years ago, at about the same time I was transitioning from DJ to KJ. I still have a karaoke host friend who smokes, and who still has to have her nicotine fix every half-hour or so. I wish I could help her become a non-smoker, but quitting is something a person has to decide for themselves. All we former smokers can do is give encouragement to those who try. |
