Post subject:  Has anyone used the new Peavey SP-2 Speakers

I am considering upgrading to a better grade of speaker, and was wondering if anyone has any experience with these. I have heard a couple of Shows here using them, and they sound impressive. any comments?

I have never heard them but given the specs and the name, they look outstanding. Of course, they are $470 a piece so they better be.

Just a question...what kinda power do you plan on running through these things?? They are set up for 1000 watts of continuous power at 8ohms.  That would take about a 5000 watt amp to drive two of them. They would sound great if you drove them, but I don't know many peeps that have use for that much power except for maybe a live band application in a relatively large venue.

What amp and speakers are you using now? You may be able to upgrade your sound quite substantially without spending $1,000 on these speakers!!

In fact, the main perk of these speakers are the black widow woofers. Getting a good sub and a good external crossover with the speakers you have now would give you pretty much the same sound for less $$. I'm poor, so this is how I think, but if you have the $$$ to burn, those are great speakers!!

Dr. D

I hate to respond to your direct question with an alternate answer but...

I've never used the Sp2's but do have and use the older SP5G from Peavey and
all I can say is I love these speakers - They sound great and are top quality
Most people comment on the sound when I use THESE versus either my lightweight Peavey 12" or even the Yamaha SV15.  SO if the SP2 are typical Peavey quality I'm sure you will love them as far as sound goes ...Now for Price and Weight ?
Thats up to your budget  and needs if you need that much capacity as Topher mentions.  Good Luck

I am running a peavey pv-2600 on the highs  I also am using a couple of electrovoice "Eliminator i". , 2 JBL soundforce 115's (the sp-2's are replacing these)  and a pv-1500 bridged on a peavey sp-118 18" subwoofer . but They just wern't cutting it. I usually play  nice size venues, and usually put 4 speakers (1 ea.)in the corners  of the building with the subs up front, and a couple of floor monitors at the stage.

I am hoping on small shows, I can use just the sp-2's

I have use SP2 but not for karaoke but as FOH speakers for live band. Good but dam heavy (older model). Just make sure the amp have enough wattage to drive them.

I'm not a big fan of Peavey equipment. There is a reason America's biggest music retailer guitar center does not sell it!

Their equipement always seems to be decent quality but Black widow speakers blow easier than any other speaker I have ever used.

Why not look into The JBL MPro Series or if you want Pro Speakers I would consider the JBL SRX, Turbosound, or EAW. EAW are quite expensive but there is not a better speaker on the market.

I would consider:

JBL SRX715 15" 2-Way - 800 watt RMS 3200 peak - about $1200 each

EAW FR153z 15" 3 way speaker - 500 watt RMS 1500 peak - about $900 each

Turbosound TXD-151 15" 2-Way - 600 watt rms 1200 peak - about $600 each

Any of these speakers with a good set of subs under them and a good amp to push them I doubt you will need to carry a second set of speakers

If your sound already sounds great in a large venue, why not just strip down to your main cabs for the smaller venue (I think that was the engineering behind the invention of the volume knob).

You are talking out of my league if you need different speakers for every venue that you play!!

The reason is they don't get a high enough profit margin in store (this comes from a friend of mine who manages a local GC).  They DO sell Peavey in their online catalog - aka Musicians Friend.

I've used Peavey subs BW equipped for over 20 years & have only blown maybe 3 drivers - due to underpowered amps.  Have a set of original SP-4t's bought in 91 that are still in use today & sound great.

SP-2's will sound great but as stated make sure you have the power to push them properly - but that's a given for any speaker.

Lonman is correct, the quickest way to blow Peavey or any speaker is not enuff amp.

He is also correct that the reason so many stores don't sell them is the store can't make as much profit on them so the salesmen talk crap about Peavey while trying to push the higher profit stuff on you.

I have a pair of SP-2's I've had for 5 years.....I would not trade them for anything else....I get told everyday that I have the best sound in town.

enjoy your SP-2's! :D

I don't have the SP-2, but I do use the Peavey SP5G and wouldn't trade them.
Might add another set of  speakers, but will keep the SP5G speakers.

I listened to the SP-2 before buying the SP5G and the sound was great,  but if I remember right, for me weight was a factor and I  still planned on buying them. In the meantime,  the salesman called and told me they had a set  of SP5G coming in that had only been used a couple of times.  After listening to them, the price could get them for and asking questions on a couple of forums, bought them instead and have not regretted that decision.

People comment on  how good the sound is all the time.
